Whittling Wooden Chickens

Canada
August 20, 2024 5:13pm CST
My whittling skills are somewhat limited. Whittling a full-size wooden chicken is beyond my capabilities and wood budget. So I came up with a plan. I whittled half a dozen chicken eggs. Does anyone here know how long it takes to incubate a wooden egg? Seriously though they do have a purpose, we'll be putting them in the nesting boxes. It helps keep the chicken from laying eggs all over their run and it cures them from eating their own eggs. Haven't had that problem yet but prevention is not a bad idea. I know I could have gotten some golf balls or even eggs shaped rocks but it was an excuse to whittle something useful.

These are cute. It's quite a nice-looking wood too.

They are. The wood is Swamp Alder. I've said before that it is really underrated. It is one of the easier to carve hardwoods available to me.

@JudyEv That's what I did. I whittled out the shape and then sanded it all smooth.

Interesting. I didn't know they would eat their own eggs.

It doesn't happen often if their feed and housing are good. Sometimes something goes wrong and eggs get broken in the nest. The chicken will clean up the mess but might like the extra protein. Then they can start breaking them on purpose and eating them.

Someone at work said that when I had them in my whittling pail before putting on a finish.

Biggest skill is patience. I really don't think I'm all that good. I just keep at it till I'm happy with it.

I don't know anyone else who's tried this. I'll post about it when and if they hatch.

Someone suggested I sell them for Easter. I'm not sure that would be as lucrative as all that. I tend to avoid making religious items as a whole anyway.
