as a trained archaeologist i made it my point to visit the colosseum in rome, and yes it is beautiful and certainly from my perspective is interesting but it is not the best example of this style of roman architecture. A far better example of this style of architecture can be found in unisia at the site of el djem. This site is complete and is still used regularly for public performances, and the site of el djem is also the site of a number of famous movies eg monty pythons life of brian.
