Chicken Noodle Soup

Well, the wifey is not feeling well today. She caught a little cold, it seems. I hope I don't get it, but I tend to take a lot of vitamins and so (knock on wood), I rarely get sick. In any event, I always keep a can or two of chicken noodle soup handy in the pantry for just such occasions, and today I brought one out and offered it to her. Her eyes lit up. "Do we have any?" "Yep. I keep a couple of cans in there in case you want it when you are sick." So, it's on the stove as we speak, heating up for her. It's the little things in life that count, right? And hey, sometimes I can use all the brownie points I can get.

Nothing beats a can of chicken noodle soup when you’re sick.

@porwest I think the reason chicken noodle soup works so well is because our brains have been conditioned over generations to believe it works.

I do have to say, it does seem to have an effect, for whatever that is worth. @FourWalls posted an interesting article which links some healing properties, and while I don't necessarily believe it, certainly there is something to be said about the connection between chicken soup and feeling better. I look at it this way, whether it is hooey or actually has merit, so long as my brain tells me it works? I am good with that.

@moffittjc I was taught it was the best medicine for a cold, and my kids swear that mom's homemade chicken noodle soup has cured more colds than any doctor they know of. I'll take it, I love it when they compliment me!

There are some I like. I just never use them. I prefer soup homemade. But when it comes to this, it's not like I'm just going to yank out a carcass, make a stock, and put together a soup. lol

@porwest I tried to train Charlie to use the toilet. It was not a success.

I always keep “Jewish penicillin” in the pantry (and yes, that is the common nickname for chicken soup) for such occasions.

@porwest — that’s why I put the link in there. They have found some connection to chicken soup and healing properties.

Hmm. I had never heard of it referred to as this. Interesting. It does seem to help, but who knows? Could be a placebo effect.

Give yourself 6 brownie points for this one!!!! And, if I were you I would get some more chicken soup on hand ASAP!!!! This "little cold" might be what they call here in my part of California "twice at home virus". I came down with what I thought was a little cold and boy was I sick!!!! Luckily I had cuppa noodles on hand and would eat half a cup for dinner and the other half for breakfast. I spent 10 days at home splitting my time between bed and my chair. Then last Sunday night I asked my neighbor to take me to the store, I needed cat food and some more cuppa noodles. Well as everyone knows, that didn't happen and I ended up taking myself on Tuesday. I got chewed out by my doctor's nurse and the doctor both. The simple cold turned out to be a more severe virus that is going around and I needed to seclude myself. (Fortunately I stocked up on cuppa noodles and cat food...I just need more kitty litter I couldn't carry all the groceries and a 20 pound bottle of kitty litter on the bus!!! Take extra good care of yourselves and make darned sure that you don't overdo. I paid dearly for my trip to the pharmacy, grocery store, bank (for quarters for laundry) and home. I am finally feeling like I am not going to die today or anytime soon. My furry nurses are making sure that I don't do too much physical stuff until I'm much much better. The most physical they allow me to do is to open the can of canned cat food. So, on your end, take darned good care of yourselves and don't push yourselves and get plenty of rest. This virus is horrible!!!!

@porwest With the mess I have you won't hesitate to see the doctor!!! I about went into shock when I discovered that I hadn't done laundry for a month...then I checked groceries and was just about totally out. But you sure as shootin will know if it's more serious than just a cold. Give yourself another 10 brownie points for taking such good care of the wife. Even with the ruminants of this virus I would devour bacon. When I feel good enough I may get some bacon to use on the hamburger buns I bought. I got those instead of bread because they just sounded better, and I was right!!!! If I can get some bacon I can have a bacon, cheddar cheese and whatever sandwich.... I don't know if I have ground meat in the freezer...I had a tough enough time getting someone to get me a box of kitty litter!!! I may, if I feel up to it, get some next week and have that bacon cheeseburger.

6 whole brownie points? Woohoo! I'd call that a good day. lol. As for wifey, I am pretty sure it's just a cold. She's just resting now, which is good for her. Hopefully it won't spoil dinner for her. I plan on making BLTs, but I guess we will have to wait and see if she will be up to it. Worst case scenario, I have some leftovers we can munch through if it comes to that. Definitely, if I get a cold (or what I think is a cold) that really knocks me for a loop, after a few days I will usually check in with the doctor just to make sure it's nothing more serious. But it has to be pretty severe. Thanks for the well wishes, and of course the nice amount of brownie points I can hopefully take to the bank when it counts.

Chicken noodle soup is indeed a warm and comforting dish, perfect for soothing both the body and the soul, especially when homemade with love. The aroma of simmering broth, tender chicken, and soft noodles can bring a sense of calm and nourishment, making it a go-to remedy for those under the weather. Your kindness and compassion as a husband shine through in your thoughtful actions, showing how deeply you care for your wife's well-being. It's heartwarming to see such dedication, especially when you're also mindful of your own health. May the nourishing power of your homemade soup bring her strength and recovery, and may you remain healthy and resilient. Your support and love are surely a great comfort to her during this time, and I join you in praying for her swift return to health. Stay strong and continue to take care of each other; your bond and care are truly inspiring.

I love when chicken soup has those nice fat noodles. I usually keep a few cans on hand too and enjoy them even I'm not sick. Hope your wife feels better soon and it's nothing more than a cold.

This roasted chicken version definitely had fat noodles. I asked her if there was much chicken and she said not as much as when I make chicken noodle soup, but it still filled the bill nicely. I am sure it's just a cold.
