I Have Only Bought One New Vehicle in my Entire Life

I buy used vehicles, and that has mostly been the case for my entire life. The only time I broke the "rule," if you want to call it that, is shortly after I got out of the navy and the car I had blew up. Well, not literally. But it did blow a head gasket. I bought a brand new, 1996 Geo Metro and paid about $10k for it. It had 17 miles on it which included my short test drive. The thing is, I never saw the value of buying new. A vehicle will lose 20% of its value the minute you drive it off the lot anyway. A vehicle purchase is not an investment. And often, provided you look for them, you can find some amazing deals on used vehicles that are low miles, potentially have some warranty left on them, and you get an immediate discount. So far as I am aware, I do not ever intend to buy a new vehicle. Maybe if I win the lottery or something. Maybe then. But even then I am not sure what purpose it would serve. Do you buy new or used?

Yes, they lose their value over time but a new car means less likely having something break down and having to do repairs.

@porwest usually new cars don’t need to be fixed unless you get into a big accident or something.

I have just never seen the value and the average time I keep a vehicle is about 12-14 years.

While married, we had new vehicles. Since my divorce, I haven't had a new one.

@porwest When you buy a new car, its value drops immediately.

To me, there is just no real value to buying new.

My first car, a Plymouth Valiant was used; and I think we bought a used van once. All the rest have been new. We drive them till they drop. I like the idea of getting a clean car. Have a good week.

We've moved countries thrice in the last 20 years. 2 new cars and 4 used ones. In Australia, it's always been used cars for us. In India, it's been new cars.

We haven't never bought a new vehicle cause we have never had the chance to & we have always bought a used 1 that we get a good deal on where we can get it paid off & we drive it till it's too old to drive another mile, the newest 1 we've had is the 1 we have now & that just happened while I was in the hosp & the other 1 went bad so hubby had to have something to drive back & forth 1 & a 1/2 hrs to & from the hosp every other day, he got a lot of good benefits out of it too.
