Day 225 – Deliverer
Judges 3:1 Now these are the nations which JEHOVAH left, that He might test Israel by them, that is, all who had not known any of the wars in Canaan 2 (this was only so that the generations of the children of Israel might be taught to know war, at least those who had not formerly known it), 3 namely, five lords of the Philistines, the Canaanites, the Sidonians, and the Hivites who dwelt in Mount Lebanon, from Mount Baal Hermon to the entrance of Hamath. 4 They were left, that He might test Israel by them, to know whether they would obey the commandments of JEHOVAH, which He had commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses.
5 Thus the children of Israel dwelt among the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. 6 They took their daughters to be their wives and gave their daughters to their sons; and they served their elohiym.
7 The children of Israel did evil in the sight of JEHOVAH. They forgot JEHOVAH their Elohiym and served the Baals and Asherahs. 8 Therefore, the anger of JEHOVAH was hot against Israel, and He sold them into the hand of Cushan-Rishathaim king of Mesopotamia; and the children of Israel served Cushan-Rishathaim eight years.
9 When the children of Israel cried out to JEHOVAH, JEHOVAH raised up a deliverer for the children of Israel, who delivered them: Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother. 10 The Pneuma of JEHOVAH came upon him, and he judged Israel. He went out to war, and JEHOVAH delivered Cushan-Rishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand; and his hand prevailed over Cushan-Rishathaim. 11 The land rested for forty years. Then Othniel the son of Kenaz died.
12 The children of Israel again did evil in the sight of JEHOVAH. JEHOVAH strengthened Eglon king of Moab against Israel, because they did evil in the sight of JEHOVAH. 13 Then he gathered to himself the people of Ammon and Amalek, went and defeated Israel, and took possession of the City of Palms. 14 The children of Israel served Eglon king of Moab eighteen years.
15 However, when the children of Israel cried out to JEHOVAH, JEHOVAH raised up a deliverer for them: Ehud the son of Gera, the Benjamite, a left-handed man. By him the children of Israel sent tribute to Eglon king of Moab. 16 Now Ehud made himself a dagger (it was double-edged and a cubit in length) and fastened it under his clothes on his right thigh. 17 He brought the tribute to Eglon king of Moab. (Now Eglon was a very fat man.) 18 When he finished presenting the tribute, he sent away the people who carried the tribute. 19 However, he himself turned back from the stone images at Gilgal, and said, “I have a secret message for you, O king.”
He said, “Keep silence!” Everyone who attended him went out from him.
20 Ehud came to him (now he was sitting upstairs in his cool private chamber). Then Ehud said, “I have a message from Elohiym for you.” He arose from his seat. 21 Then Ehud reached with his left hand, took the dagger from his right thigh, and thrust it into his belly. 22 Even the hilt went in after the blade, and the fat closed over the blade, for he did not draw the dagger out of his belly; and his entrails came out. 23 Then Ehud went out through the porch and shut the doors of the upper room behind him and locked them. 24 When he went out, Eglon’s servants came to look, and to their surprise, the doors of the upper room were locked. They said, “He is probably attending to his needs in the cool chamber.” 25 They waited till they were embarrassed, and still, he did not open the doors of the upper room. Therefore, they took the key and opened them. They found their master, fallen dead on the floor. 26 However, Ehud escaped while they delayed and passed beyond the stone images and escaped to Seirah. 27 It happened, when he arrived, that he blew the trumpet in the mountains of Ephraim, and the children of Israel went down with him from the mountains; and he led them. 28 Then he said to them, “Follow me, for JEHOVAH has delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand.” They went down after him, seized the fords of the Jordan leading to Moab, and did not allow anyone to cross over. 29 At the time they killed about ten thousand men of Moab, stout men of valor; not a man escaped. 30 Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. The land rested for eighty years.
31 After him was Shamgar the son of Anath, who killed six hundred men of the Philistines with an ox goad; and he also delivered Israel.
God’s names:
JEHOVAH – Self-existent, Eternal
Elohiym – Supreme God
Hagios Pneuma – Sacred, Holy, Breath, Spirit
Yeshuwa – Jesus
God’s character:
Deliverer
Have you ever felt as though life is against you? No matter what you do, or where you go, you can’t get ahead. You can’t find the place of safety and security you see in others.
JEHOVAH tested Israel to know if they would remain faithful to Him or submit to the nations around them. They failed His test when they gave their children in marriage to the nations and served their elohiym. JEHOVAH sent the nations against them and put them under tribute. However, when the children of Israel cried out to Him, He sent them a judge to deliver them from the hand of their conqueror’s. Israel was faithful to JEHOVAH for the life of the judge, then they turned from Him once again.
When you accepted Yeshuwa as Savior and Lord, you committed your life in service to Him. However, your former life called to you, and you gave into the temptation to return to your former life.
Satan will do whatever it takes to separate you from the love of Elohiym. He will show you how good you had it before you accepted Yeshuwa as Savior and Lord. He will make your former life look so pleasant you won’t open your Bible or spend time in fellowship with other believers. When you see other believers, you give them excuses about why you can’t go to church or Bible study. Yet, when things get out of hand and you find yourself with financial and health trouble, then you turn to Elohiym to deliver you from your trouble. You go to church and Bible study. You might pray and seek JEHOVAH’S face until He delivers you from your trouble. However, it’s not long before Satan comes after you again.
If you find yourself in the same endless cycle Israel did, you have only one course open to you, submit yourself fully to Elohiym and He will deliver you from Satan’s hand. Don’t return to your former life. Find a mentor who can come alongside you to help you when Satan comes after you. Being a Christian isn’t easy. Satan wants you back and will do whatever it takes to make it happen.
1 Peter 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.
9 Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world. (NKJV)
Remember, Yeshuwa defeated Satan when He rose from the dead. He defeated Hell, death, and the grave. Yet Satan will not go down without a fight. You need to be vigilant every day. If you let your guard down for a moment, he will seize the opportunity to turn you to your former life. Don’t let him. Seek out other Christians and allow them to come alongside you to help you defeat Satan. Allow the Hagios Pneuma to teach you and show you whom you can trust to lead you in the way you should go.
Let’s pray: Father, help me remain steadfast in You when Satan comes after me to separate me from You. Help me seek out those stronger in faith than I am to mentor me and keep me from temptation. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
