Not fun times

Yesterday I went to the orthopedic Doc and yup, expected news. Left knee is worn to the bone. Only cure is a new knee. Ortho Doc didn't want to address my issues with needles. Of course deciding to go through this surgery is a gigantic decision for many, many reasons. Pain among them- first two weeks are going to be awful according to him. Today I went to my regular medical provider. She wouldn't do a blood draw. Lab does that. No they don't have numbing cream. Nice enough lady but not super nice about my feelings about needles. Today I also found a friendly needle phobic group on FB. Result of today's medical appointment: an ultrasound has been ordered for my swollen left thigh. I talked with a friendly lady in the Lab. Nope to deadening cream. Yes! and okay to bring Rufus. (Please no snapping at anyone getting near me.) So the Lab opens at 7:30 am. I will go and see if I can get through the blood draw. Rufus will be with me. This is only the start of a long tunnel. The very start.

I wish you luck with whatever you decide to do, but it sounds like you have made your decision.I hope your daughter or sister can stay and help out for awhile. Someone will have to deal with the pets when you are recuperating, as well as help you.

@sallypup You might want to get everything set up first. Before you go forward Probably best to assume you will need help with everything initially rather than thinking you will be able to help yourself..at least for the first week or two.My mom has never had the knee replacement done which she has needed for years. She can walk as long as it isn't too far..for longer distances she uses a rotator I meant a rolator.

@snowy22315 Groans from me. No daughter or sister as helpers. You are right: somebody is going to have to take over the animal needs. We are hoping to get a low income friend to come in and help some- she could use some cash. We bought a hide a bed for the bottom bedroom. Can I get from there to the bathroom?? Not sure about that. So much to think about.

Thank you @TheHorse. I am worried about the over the night hospital stay. I read about good solutions then I get to my providers and they're not budging.

@sallypup They always seem more interested in saving/making money than providing good care for patients.

@TheHorse I wish you had been on speaker with me when I spoke to the social worker. She called me "hun." That kind of baby talk blows up my brain. NO way will I respect a so called professional with that manner of speech.

I will say my dad’s knee replacement was awful those first two weeks. But my great uncle’s wasn’t bad at all. He was in hardly any pain and only had a walker because the doctor insisted. Valerie said hers wasn’t bad either. I don’t want to give you false hope though.

If and when you get the knee replacement, make sure you take ALL the PT that is recommended for you. I stopped mine early and don't have the mobility in that leg that I would expect. Good luck and have a great weekend. I hope your blood draw goes OK.

@sallypup That's good. They will give you specific exercises to do for your knee to increase mobility, etc.

I’m so sorry. I know from others who have had a new knee, it can be difficult. I think our Snowy gave the best advice here… get everything ready beforehand if you possibly can, it will save stress later. Better to try to have everything you might need in case you need it!! Keep us posted, Lenore!!

I am sorry for your fears and difficulties. Hopefully Rufus is a help. Yes this is the start and the only way through . One step at a time. In the end I hope your knee is restored.

Yeah, when it comes to doctors they only care about addressing the urgent things. Not so much the little things.

What does a "new knee" really mean? Anyway, good luck. You know I'm going through the same thing right now.

I'm so sorry to hear this. Having a needle phobia will be the pits when facing a knee replacement.
