Only in Country

I am not a huge fan of country, but that tends to be truer when it comes to new country. A lot of the older stuff, what I like to call true country, is actually fun to listen to. And of course, the lyrics can always be fun too. Take this one from Dave Dudley, "Six Days on the Road," which is all about a horny truck driver who's been on the road for six days rushing home to make love to his wife. He's not a cheating man, and he won't take care of business with other women, but he's saving himself for his special woman. Interesting about this country singer known for his truck driving anthems is that he was born in Wisconsin, which seems like an odd place for a country singer to come from. But heck, the very popular Keith Urban is an Australian. Go figure. Only in country.

I was born and raised on country as well as 60's music and higher in years. I love it. Some of the new stuff not so much though. I love the song that you're talking about though. We used to play it a lot when I was a kid because my dad was store set up for pep boys and gone...well a lot.

I was never exposed to much country at all when I was a kid. Of course, it was the 80s and MTV was the thing back then. I got into country a bit in the 90s when I was in the navy, but after that it sort of lost me, but now I even appreciate the older stuff more than the stuff I was listening to in the 90s.

@porwest I'm eclectic. My taste in music ranges so widely I can't even begin to explain it lol. That's because my dad was born in 1945 so I have all the music from then and on. Then my mom was raised on old country like Dolly Parton, Tanya Tucker, Loretta Lynn and others of that time. Then you get exposed to music when you hit the school age and that ranged from country to rap. When I met my husband I got really into rock, though I already listened to it a little bit, I gave more bands a chance. it's all in what you get exposed to and what sticks. My husband can tell you a rock band's biography and my whole thing is oh I like it we'll add it to the collection lol.

Hey, the Joe Bonsall of the Oak Ridge Boys was born in Philadelphia. Danny Davis was from Dorchester, Massachusetts. And, of course, you had Ian Tyson, Montana Slim, and Hank Snow, who were Canadians.

Hmm. I guess it's just stereotypical to think they all mostly come from Texas and places down south.

@FourWalls Beyoncé. Country. As much as my big toe, and I was born in New Jersey and have lived in the Midwest most of my life if that's any indication how country my big toe is.

I actually learned this one from a Jesse Colin Young album. He was a hippy dippy peace love dove kind of guy who founded the Youngbloods.

@porwest Well, thanks for acknowledging my brilliant repertoire. I AM a legend in my own mind. Or not. But let me see if I can find either Jesse's take on Six Days... or one of his more famous hippy dippy tunes. Hah! This is pretty funny! The sound and the video are way out of synch. Is that you on the right?

If I remember correctly, I believe Sawyer Brown did a version of this song. I have never heard of Jesse Colin Young. I do know of another Colin, but I don't remember where from. My mind is probably on vacation in Tahoe somewhere. Perhaps a little bird told me about him. It's a real riddle, sometimes. Ah heck. What am I talking about. Maybe I just want to go to Tulsa, have I ever been there to go back? Does Pancho and Lefty live there? It'll come to me later. Maybe when I am cleaning the moths out of my truck's grill from the road trip I recently took.

@TheHorse I have always liked this song. As for the guy on the right, he looks nothing like me.

I'm trying to work out why the 'Go figure' re Keith Urban. We have a lot of country singers. Or are all country singers supposed to be American? Just curious.

Well, because I made a reference to a Wisconsinite as an unusual place for a country singer to come from, and certainly country is a very American thing, which makes it unusual for non-Americans to develop country singers. lol Regardless of where country singers come from nowadays, Americans invented country music.

The only country I like is from Patsy Cline, the Everly Brothers and Shania Twain. Have a good weekend.

I can deal with Jonny Cash, Merle Haggard, George Strait and quite a few others. You have a good weekend as well, although by the time I got to this comment it is almost over. So have a good next week as well. lol

Yep. That's Dave Dudley. Unfortunately, he passed away in 2003 at the age of 75. He definitely has the old country and truck driver vibe going on, doesn't he?

I'm a big country fan (both the older and newer stuff). The newer stuff does seem to be a little more pop than the old hew haw type.

Definitely. I am not a huge fan of either, but I can tolerate the old stuff more.
