Bread and butter pickles project in progress

I love pickles in all forms. Normally I will go for a garlicky dill pickle but growing up my grandmother used to always put out sweet gherkins and bread and butter pickles. I came across a recipe for them last week and decided to try making my own. Why not? The recipe surprised me a bit because you mix up sliced cucumbers, onions, and kosher salt and then cover it with ice cubes and let everything sit for 2 hours. There was no explanation or rationale for doing that. Hey whatever. I've got time to do that. I'd love to know what the point is though. The recipe says it makes a quart of pickles which is 1 big mason jar. I will likely bring them into work to snack on. We shall see how they turn out!
