Also known as the "Pearl of Africa", Uganda is one of the poorest countries in the world. It is located in Eastern Africa, bordering Kenya to the east, Tanzania to the south, Rwanda, DRC and Burundi to the west and South Sudan to the north. It is well known for having had a lot of post colonial drama. From politics, civil wars and coup' d'états, the countries has had many struggles. Notably were the rather egocentric and illiterate leaders like Amin Dada who practically destroyed the country's economy in the late 60's, Milton Obote the ever drunken president who was always absent when needed and Joseph Kony, the LRA (Lord's Resistance Army) who led rebels to cause misery in most parts of Northern Uganda. Despite all that, the country remains with surplus food throughout the year. This is attributed to good climatic conditions, fertile soils and excellent government policies on matters Agriculture. In many parts of Northern Uganda for instance, farming is done without any application of fertilizer yet they harvest a lot. Concerning government policy, the Government of Uganda has set aside hundreds of thousands of acres of land for Agriculture to produce food which is later sold to citizens at a half market price. Unfortunately, most of this is smuggled to Kenya. Again, the government leases land from some citizens, uses it to produce more food and pays the owners monthly stipends. At harvest time, the land owners are again given part of the harvest. Uganda remains the only country in Africa that is self sufficient in terms of food.

Sure, they rarely have any food shortage despite having a number of internal conflicts and hosting hundreds of thousands of refugees from Sudan, South Sudan, Somalia and DRC

I hope there will be a leader who will stand up for Africa who will truly help the people and the country; to think that Africa have a massive production of Diamonds, and yet this i happening to its people. I am praying that a revival will come to that nation very soon.

Sure, it does. It only lacks proper technology and good leadership. Otherwise it can do better than all other African Countries

That is an interesting fact about Uganda. I was aware that is one of poorest countries in World. Being self sufficient in food is a big achievement in spite of being poor in GDP and other economic factors. The problem with some of African countries are they do not have a leader who has long terms vision of how the country need to progress. That include Uganda. Successive governments and Rebels have not helped Uganda prosper. Again , agriculture alone cannot solve a country's problems. There needs to be other good sources of income for government and people. Hope things get better for Uganda
