9/13/24 - Update On My Husband

Spoke with him yesterday and was totally blindsided.
He said that he is getting in and out of bed and in and out of his wheelchair without any assistance; so I asked him what we were waiting for since that was the last barrier to his returning home. He said, "I don't know". He said that he still couldn't walk without the walker. We had already talked about him returning home and using my rollator. As you know, we even had a date for him to return home before he came down with COVID. I am totally gobsmacked. It could take months until he can walk without a walker.
I am going to see him today.
Thank you for your continued support, prayers and thoughts.

Does he want to walk without the walker before he comes home? He has had such a long journey (not that you haven't, too, with all of this!) it could be he might need a little time to regain his confidence? Men never admit that they could be a bit scared...but that's possible. Or maybe, he's worried he might come home and not be quite strong enough yet?
Maybe a few more days will give him some more confidence and assurance. It's great news that he can do the bed and the wheelchair, for sure!

He has admitted that he's scared; but now he wants to stay until he can walk without a walker. That could take months and thousands of dollars.

@MarieCoyle They use the gait belt in PT. I saw him get into bed after a shower on Friday. He is not as independent as he told me. He had a great deal of difficulty getting up and into the bed.

His legs are frail and weak, from what you have said. He may well surprise you and soon feel confident enough to go home. Is there a nurse you can speak with privately about this? Maybe she/he could give you some insights on can he get as far as the bathroom and back, can he manage the bathroom by himself, and such. I am sure if he is using a walker that there is an attendant with him at all times. Do they use a gait belt as well, when he is walking? Maybe while you are there today he will get up and down by himself to show you his progress.

Having a walker isn’t a big drawback. My dear aunt of blessed memory walked around her house with one for the last ten years she lived there.

@LindaOHio — at this stage of the game that may be an impossibility.

@LindaOHio Oh!!! I didn’t realize that. Yes, I can understand why that is upsetting.

That doesn't seem a realistic view on his part, if he's elderly then it's likely he'll need a walker for the rest of his life but he should want to go home and continue PT to see if he can regain all his balance needs. I'm 75 and figure I'll need one in no less than 5 years.

@rebelann That would probably put pressure on him. He's told me not to pressure him.

Hope this is the miracle you've been waiting for Linda. Enjoy your visit and hope you get good news that he'll be able to come home. (even if he has to use a walker)

I think he wants to wait until he can walk without assistance. We can't afford that.

Glad you get to see him today, See what you can find out perhaps now is a good time to get him home, Besides he might need a walker for assistance now always so that he can do it at home too. Perhaps he just needs encouragement and there are people who don't walk without walkers, If I don't use a shopping cart to keep me up due to my bum knee when I do go out I do use a four-pronged cane,

@LindaOHio Sorry. I thought if he could get in and out of bed and the chair that was a good thing. I've read since about him wanting to be able to walk first.

Maybe he will have to rely on the walker from now on, or at least a cane. As long as he can get around enough to get out of bed and use the bathroom, that's a great sign he can return home.

That is amazing. I saw down below he doesn't want to come home until he doesn't need a walker. Doesn't he know you do can't afford to keep him there indefinitely? He really seems like he is afraid to return home for whatever reason.

Surely he has alot of pride that he doesn't want to come home until he is walking without the walker.
We only get 1 life and we need to make the most of it, and using a walker is very common and safe in a home-setting.
I hope that he is ready to come home soon.
