Does chronic constipation get better with time?

I guess nobody will fully understand the physiological and psychological effects of this problem unless they have been through it or are going through it. It’s different from normal constipation. It doesn't come and go. It's persistent. It requires taking laxatives everyday. Sometimes it’s tough to live with chronic constipation. I am just 21 years old. I go to college. And after taking laxatives, I have to be near the washroom for a 12 hour window(it varies a lot. Sometimes it takes 4 hours sometimes 12 hrs). With laxatives, you have a loose motion type of bowel movement. So the moment you have the bowel movement, you have to go to the washroom. That’s why the foremost thing I get reminded of after waking up is the uncertainty of my day-to-day activities. Everything depends on when I have the bowel movement. It’s controlling my life now. I don't have any appetite sometimes and in general I also have gastric problems. It started 2019 onwards. The doctor said I have digestion issues (same as what my recent doctor said). On some days, I got late for college just because I did not have a bowel movement at the right time. I have to preplan my days and come back home at the right time when I am taking the laxatives in the morning or noon. I cannot have sudden plans. I know this sounds weird to people who don't have it. But those who have it, can relate. Once you are born, going to the washroom, becomes a normal day-to-day task. All of a sudden, it starts controlling your life and you have to take medicines for it to happen. By now, I have left all hopes for this problem to get solved as this started when I was 19 years old. I consulted an MD. He gave medicines for gas, bloating, and IBS-C. He also said that I can keep on taking the laxatives. I don't think there is any proper treatment for this. I looked up online and every person who has had it said the same. There is no one-in-all medicine like you have for cold/fever... People keep on suggesting drink water and stuff but all of it might work temporarily(if you are lucky enough), otherwise there's no permanent solution. I am trying to make peace with my life. But honestly day-to-day activities get hindered. It's been roughly 4 years now. Have you been through chronic constipation or IBS-C? Did it get better with time?

I was suffering from it two years ago but I am normal now. How did it happen- Did my yoga regularly, especially the stretching exercises. Next took warm lime water with salt and a spoonful of honey early in the morning in empty stomach. I can't eat much at a time so I take small amounts a day at least 4 times. My diet includes vegetables, fruits that help in releasing gas as well keeps your bowel movement normal. Balancing your diet is very important.

@Dreamerby I suffered for two years. I did have to take Ayurvedic laxatives but I stopped them as that didn't cure me. So I treated me according to yoga and nutrition. Grapes and raisins are very good for constipation. I take them usually after lunch.

@aninditasenDid your husband and other family members support you through it? Did they understand your problem and showed concern for you? Or it was mostly you doing all the necessary things?

For how long did you suffer? Did you have to take laxatives then?

It can, but you have to be patient. Talk to your doctor about changes you can make to your diet to make sure things keep moving. Sometimes you can make lifestyle changes to help with the problem, too. Like getting more active. Make sure your doctor understands your struggles so they can provvide the best treatments that meet the lifestyle you need to live. Use public washrooms if you have to, too.

@Dreamerby Sometime chronic conditions take those choices from you. But, yes. Like NJ Chicca said stop with the laxitives. They will dehydrate you and make things ten times worse. Another tip, make sure to stay hydraded. And, no, I don't mean just drinking water. Maybe a sports drink or smart water or your favorite tea, soda, etc. You need to balance eletrolytes, too. Water alone won't do it, and staying hydraded will keep your nunber 2's softer and easier to move.

I am kind of a germophobe, so I refrain from using public washrooms. That's why I have to preplan everything so that I am at home when I have to go to the loo.

@kaylachan I do take electral powder regularly because stimulant laxatives decrease electrolyte content of the body.

No, unfortunately, I’ve been dealing with a chronic illness and my constipation gets so bad I don’t have bowel movements for three days sometimes and then there are days where I will have six bowel movements in one day. Make sure you are not eating a lot of fiber (of course you need it but don’t over load yourself as you are already constipated. Eat grapes, beans, vitamin C, etc. be careful with laxative because your body will become dependent on it and won’t be able to make any bowel movements without it. Also don’t push, you’ll give yourself hemorrhoids. Best of luck.

So your IBS-C is because of another chronic illness you have? Do you take laxatives? I take stimulant laxatives mostly. Otherwise I experience gas, bloating and loss of appetite.

I have IBS-C but I don’t take laxatives for it. Just fiber. I do have Miralax in case it goes on for a long time (I ended up in the ER earlier this summer because of it). Of course, mine isn’t chronic, either. Hope you can get some relief.

@Dreamerby — almost never. Of course, you also have to understand that the American diet is much, much different from an Indian diet. Our food might kill you.

I can understand how this impacts on your day-to-day life. I would do more research or perhaps consult a specialist.

Stop taking laxatives. They are making the problem worse. Eat foods that are high in fiber and you can even add fiber supplement powder to your drinks (water, juice, coffee, tea, etc) or chew fiber gummy supplements.

I hope you will still have time to schedule drinking laxative in a more comfortable time with you. It is really hard to have that kind of situation. Always keep a positive thought in your mind always... Life happens and we have different struggles but I am positive that we can always overcome each day. God bless and have a great start of the week..

Thankyou for sharing the positive outlook. Yes I try to be grateful for whatever I have and not think of the daily struggle I face because of this. Thanks again for replying in a positive way
