Vince's photo has nothing to do with the discussion but is another photo from Araluen Botanical Park.
I wrote about reading Water for Elephants and maybe I mentioned what a lot of research the author had done into how train circuses operated in those times.
Now, I’m reading the non-fiction book, The Big Top by Fred Bradna, who was equestrian director of firstly Barnum and Bailey circus then for Ringling Bros. He remained in the latter position for 30 years. One particular incident within the book I thought you might find interesting.
Woodrow Wilson, one-time president of the USA, was a great fan of the circus but had to pass up an invitation to ride on an elephant in the Ringling circus. His advisors thought a Democrat riding on the symbol of Republicanism (an elephant) was not a good look at all. The Secret Service forbade it too.
In 1916, Wilson employed the circus for political purposes. He had not announced his intent to stand for re-election but, as he was escorted across the arena to his reserved seats, and while the orchestra played ‘Hail to the Chief’, he threw his hat squarely into the middle of the ring. This was interpreted by the crowd as an indication that he had finally ‘thrown his hat into the ring’ and reporters ran from the tent to telegraph the news to their respective papers.

I'm enjoying this book and find it interesting that the little details given all tie in with the first book, such as each performer being given two buckets of water per day for their personal use. And the dining tents being divided up between performers and others, with performers having table-cloths and silver service - all very intriguing to me.

That is an interesting story for sure. Thanks for sharing. I went to the Wilson house once in DC. That was interesting, He was born in this state, and the city where he was born also has his birthplace as a historical exhibit. I haven't made it to that, but possibly sometime, if it doesn't cost too much. There is another exhibit there I would rather see.

That would have been a strange combination . I understand the secret service as it would have been hard to protect them

Very interesting! I did not know of this story at all, but what an interesting way to announce his running for re-election.

@JudyEv Americans are horrible with history. I would be willing to bet that half of the population here doesn't even know who our first President was.

@moffittjc I think Australia is much the same. I'd be battling to name our Deputy Prime Minister.

That's a great story. I'm glad the circuses finally called it quits and let the animals quit performing. Have a good weekend.
