Is working smart a better way to success compared to working hard?

Working hard is what we learnt as our way to success. We used to put effort in our studies and we used to feel proud of the slogging and the results we got in our exams and colleges.
Once we joined the corporate jobs, we hear that working smart is what is needed. According to most corporates, outcomes based on optimizing time and efforts bring the best results. It is often strategies that work, and that needs to be focussed upon. Working smart helps in finding innovative solutions and avoid unnecessary tasks.
However, I have always felt a person who worked hard would be the one who would find ways to be smart and bring in strategies that work. He/she would be the best in knowing which tasks take time and what needs to be optimized rather than who has being claiming/or has been working smart.
So what do you think - is working smart a better way to success compared to working hard?

I think yes, because it will lessen the time, and it will help you avoid over stress with things when you can do it in a more effective and easy way.

You need to learn to work hard in order to work smart. Working hard doesn't have to mean burning yourself out to the point of exhustion. It just means that you develop a strong work ethic. You show up to your job, or you complete tasks given to you. Doesn't matter if it's an assignment for school, or something given to you at a nine-to-five job. You put time and effort into it. For example, if you're a high school student assigned a research paper, someone who works hard takes time to actually do the research. If they work smart, they break up tasks over the time they're given to complete the assignment so they stay sharp and fresh and complete a clean well-thought out assignment. This is both working hard and working smart. Hard work simply means taking the time and effort to do the work.
Schools teach children to work hard, then later teach them to work smart.
If you were ever asked to show your work while doing a math assignment, that's working hard.
An example of working smart, would be if you were given a week to do a research project. And, you turn in a clean well-constructed paper complete with list of references and sorce material. that's working both hard and smart.
Workplaces as adults want you to present complete clean easy-to-understand work. But, they often give you tight timelines to do it. Which is where time managment and those hard-working skills come in. If you learn to break down the steps to complete the task, then it's easier to handle and get done in the timeline provided.
