Songs that don't mean what you think they mean

I was watching a YouTube video about this subject. I'm not going to steal what he directly talked about. I'm sure a lot of people know that "Every Step You Take" by Sting is about a stalker. That is so obvious I don't know why anyone would want it at their marriage. But I want to talk about the difference between the music videos and the music. Of course, I'll be talking about what two different people got out of a couple of songs, myself and Connie. Now our local cable company got MTV pretty early. So, Connie, who was only working part time and was supposed to do the house stuff and do her art, but wasn't. She saw the videos for "White Wedding" and "Jack and Diane" but watched them, and didn't really listen to them. I had a job where I could listen to the radio. I heard them long before I ever saw the videos. She had a weird take on White Wedding. What she saw and she didn't like about "White Wedding" because of all the crazy weird... Satanic? stuff... I pointed out that this is an older brother who is mad his sister is knocked up and, by God, that jerk is going to marry his sister and make her an "honest woman." I pointed out that the lyrics were about a "shotgun" wedding. "Who's your Superman?" ahhh, the guy who knocked you up? On the other hand "Jack and Diane" wasn't the wholesome 50's sort of song. I pointed out that Diane was sitting on Jack's lap and he had his hand... where? I pointed out to her that of course they aren't going to make it about per-marrital sex, they want it on the radio and TV. But listen to the lyrics, shut your eyes and LISTEN. She did, she changed her mind. I don't dislike "Jack and Diane" because I remember being a teenager. I remember some of those girls had been pressured into sex. The pill was around, but the only teens taking them were... well, like a friend of mine who's cycles were just insane. She had periods for several weeks and bled so much she was in danger of anemia. I couldn't complain, because when I was a teen I would go 35 days or so between them. I did learn, however, that I needed to be bounced around to be regular - I know, sounds weird. I was overdue for a period, I was going to be going to a university out of town and I knew if I didn't do something, it would start the day I left, and my first two days were really heavy. I call the owner of the stable and ask if I could go out and ride my favorite horse, for a little bit. I promised I would only walk and trot, and I'd do it early so it wasn't too hot. I mean - August in Texas! Went out, rode her just a bit and it started the next day. I kid you not, if I didn't ride back then, it wouldn't start for over 2 months. So, did you ever have to correct someone about the meaning of a song? I only did it with Connie because I had to live with her, and I didn't want her to misunderstand the meaning of a song.
