What do you think of art that looks like trash?

I was taking a survey yesterday that showed what looked like a twisted piece of metal from a car accident or something, and asked my impressions and what the art was trying to convey. I minced no words saying what I thought, and then I was worried the survey might be rejected, or that I hurt someone's feelings or something. I just hate when there is some random thing like that and people try to pass it off as art. I don't hate all abstract art..but who's to stop anybody from picking up a piece of twisted metal, or a broken branch and calling it art?

Yes, one time on 60 Minutes they were showing art critics some paintings done by kindergarteners, and presenting it as some sort of advante garde art. It may have been framed nicely or something. That part I don't remember. but the art critics were all impressed, like they were masterpieces or something. It was very telling.

@rebelann It isn't just the 20 somethings doing stuff like this. It has been going on for years.

They are probably secretly laughing at anyone who would pay for it.

The creator can call it whatever they want . . . but so can the viewer . Not my thing either. Reminds me of my fellow art major friend . . . he was in graphic design but was also Mr. Funny . . . he entered a burrito from the cafeteria in our college fine art student show .

Too many goofy things like that passing as art, but in your friend's case I am sure he was joking..

@snowy22315 Oh yah, he was joking for sure . . . and I think he added several more entries (a big foil ball covered with rubber bands comes mind).

Yes, any idiot could pick up a piece of twisted metal and call it art and give it a fancy name and say it is searching for meaning or something.

@snowy22315 If no matter who can do the same, it's not art.

Some things in nature could really be labeled as art but not a twisted piece of metal in my opinion.

It reminds me of the Artist's Sh*t. The same artist also made the Artist's breath... a balloon.
The Oxford Dictionary defines art as "the use of the imagination to express ideas or feelings, particularly in painting, drawing or sculpture". Imagination is all it takes, apparently.
Personally, I believe one little effort has to be done to transform mundane items, or even trash, into art. I don't mind conceptual art but I agree you can't just pick up a piece of twisted metal and call it art.
Sometimes changing the location is enough, I could place that piece of metal on a bed and pretend it's a person. Then that'd be art. It does take some imagination as well as some effort.

Conceptual art, yes I believe that is the proper term. You make a good point..about doing something to put it in a scene.

What looks like art is always in the eyes of the people looking at it, I know what you're saying but to someone what looks bad to you might really look good, You just have to say what you think,

I think those who would think it was appropriate piece of artwork would definitely be in the minority

They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder but I wouldn't consider twisted metal art.

IF they had asked if it was an eyesore, I would have responded positively..

The survey company wants you to be totally honest. It ruins the demographics if you don't tell the truth. Have a good weekend.

I think it's still an art for looking at things in a different view

I suppose beauty is indeed in the eye of the beholder. I do not like or care for the type of so-called ''art'' you describe, either. I also do not like art formed with AI tools, I do not call that art. It's making pictures from graphics...to me, art is all personal creativity, of some type. Drawing, painting, sculpting, weaving, creating something out of an idea that the person feels the need to express. Maybe that's the old-fashioned way of thinking about art, but that's how I feel about it.
