10/5/24 - Update On My Husband

Spoke with him last night. PT is going OK. He still talks about walking without a walker first before he comes home. I don't know what to do to convince him he just needs to come home. He feels pressured when I talk to him about it. Shortly we will receive another bill for his room for October. The "two weeks" he talked about have come and gone. I just want him home. The physical therapy and skilled nursing records are ready for pickup at the desk. At least we won't have to worry about having to ship everything "next day". We have plenty of time. I need to get on the phone and ask questions about filling out the appeal form. Thank you for your continued prayers, support and thoughts. Photo Credit: Pixabay

I agree with Chicca down below. You might need to have someone talk to him besides you about this.Surely, some of the staff there he feels close to.For some reason he seems to have convinced himself it is better to be in the rehab than to go home.

He thinks he's going to stay there until he can walk without a walker...that could be months and tens of thousands of dollars later.

@LindaOHio Right, that isn't acceptable..and being in an environment like that he is being exposed to germs. He could get staph, strep, Covid again .who knows what?

At this point he should just go home and have assistance from home health aides.

See if his doctor can convince him to come home. Then get his butt on the phone to the VA or other veterans groups (state or local) to get help from them.

@LindaOHio — ouch. I know that you know thi, but that MUST change. Do you have a PCP? Might he/she help?

@FourWalls No. He thought about going to this doctor just a few miles away; but he never did anything about it. The @@@@ has hit the fan because the facility called today and said that the PT guy said Mr. Ohio has come as far as he can go. They want him to transition HOME.

The doctor at the rehab facility? He procrastinated and did not set up a new PCP. So he has no doctor.

While the days are still nice it would be so great to get him to go for a little stroll outside, that might make him realize that he would be fine at home and to give it a try.

@LindaOHio It can be. But it doesn't have to limit him. When he understands that he will feel better

Yes, he may never walk without a walker. It would be hard for me to realize that if I were in his situation.

Is he worried about being home and having to use a walker? Of course I can't speak for him, but if I was in that situation I would be doing everything in my power to get out of that place and back to my comfy home. I hope he will change his mind and decide he really wants to be home, walker or not.

@LindaOHio I can understand the desire for complete independence, especially in us men who don't want to seem (or be viewed) as being dependent on something else to help us function.

@moffittjc I wish there was a more manly looking walker! I don't want to look like I'm a nursing home canidate so I use a dragon head cane.

Just tell him he doesn't need to use the walker at home. Bare in mind, and make sure he understand this, using the walker at the ficility is part of their safety proticol, like having a wheelchair for everyone to use.

I don't think we have much option here as to whether we stay in hospital or go home. They are keen to get you home here because of the numbers of infections that can be picked up in hospitals.

I know it's all concerning. In trying to put it together from what you have said lately on your posts, he still has a lot of chest congestion, and still getting breathing treatments, right? Has he reached a point that he can get out of bed or a chair by himself yet, and use the walker to get to the bathroom and back? The mobility thing will be very important if he is to go home...he has to either be mobile or you would have to have 24 hour help. Forgive me for asking nosy questions, I am just trying to put all the pieces together. I hope he can improve enough to feel confident about going home. It sounds like he puts a lot of pressure on himself, trying to be able to do things. One thing for sure, he never gives up!

He is no longer congested or getting breathing treatments. No, he can't go to the bathroom by himself. I'm getting really stressed about this.

@LindaOHio That’s good news about the congestion and breathing treatments! If he can’t get to the bathroom by himself, that’s a big concern. I hope he can gain enough strength to be able to make that happen soon.

If he were to go home before the appeal is processed, wouldn’t that have bearing on the decision? Not sure how it works if someone tries for an appeal and then goes home.

We are appealing for the unpaid time he spent from May 11 to the present time. I doubt we'll win; but it would be nice to get some of that money back.

Can you let him know that if he goes home, you can get some health aides to help him. It's much more comfortable at home than in the facility.

I agree with Chicaa and Eva is also right, may be he might always need a walker now. You are wasting money if he stays there. You must have someone to talk with him and to convince him that therapy at home is a better choice.

@LindaOHio - I know they are paid, so it will be hard to have someone he trusts to convince him. May be her second cousin who was a nurse.
