I like the system in that the gambits and the basic system does allow a certain amount of strategy.
I haven't played much but from what I've seen so far, I did notice two things:
1. The aeon can apparently be summoned by one person at a time? Considering the aeon seems not so powerful, I wish they would reconsider it to having either a fixed person with a more powerful aeon (Yuna style from FFX), or allow more people to be able to summon the same aeon.
2. Its probably just me, but I prefer the turn based system too at times, as the wait time can get a little slow.
However, I do like the ATB system to, to a point. And I suppose the actually abilities made available are fascinating to uncover, so its alright.

I definitely miss the old style, but I do like that there's no interruption from the flow of walking to get into a battle, you actually walk up to the monsters.
It doesn't "feel" as much like a Final Fantasy game because of the system, another reason why I would have preferred they kept it.
But, besides the issues of tradition, it's a good system. It allows multiple characters to be managed in real time, and it takes a bit of thought and skill to make it work well.

I too like the new gambit system because it saves time rather than the old screen to screen random enemy encounters. The monsters are there you can avoid them if you want or fight if you want. This system gives us freedom to choose to fight or just run, saving time and effort, fighting weak monsters and option to run fighting strong enemies. And they also need this gambit system because of the new magic "dont move or immobilize" which only appeared in the game final fantasy tactics.

At first I hate the new battle system as it is new for me. I missed the "warp" screen when the characters encounter enemies. However thank goodness for the gambit system as it proves useful for me. When one of character HP getting low, the gambit system allows the ally to heal the others. I missed the old system but I am getting used to this new system right now. The new licence system board works almost the same as sphere grid but I like sphere grid more to be honest.

The FF games before FF7 were all on the Nintendo and Super Nintendo and the names of spells and abilities were limited to a small box. That is why the magic appeared like Blt1, Blt2, Blt3, ect. They did the same thing on FF7 because that was the first Final Fantasy game on the Playstation, so they wanted to see if they could add more characters to the box. They decided the Playstation disks could handle the information so they changed the names to Fire, Fira, Firaga, Firaja, ect.

it FINALLY rocks, i dont have to worry about being attacked every 2 seconds, it kills the game when youre going somewhere and OH NO YOU HAVE TO FIGHT NOW.

I love the new system, dont get me wrong the old system was good, but the new system makes it more interesting for me anyways, no more running around in circles waiting for a battle to flash up, you can se exactly whats comig up before you get around to fighting it

I'm still getting used to it but it's a refreshing way of playing RPG's. I've played a number of RPG's and it's good that they are trying to innovate/improve the battle systems.
I also liked the old turn based gameplay though and I missed the materia system in FFVII

I agree with you on the older style. It is nice.. but it's also a lot like kingdom hearts. helps you prepare for what you see is coming. ^_^

I miss the turn based battle system previous FF titles used. But the new is not that bad, after you've set the gambits you can just leave it. It's also what I don't like about it you miss the interactivity of giving commands every now and then.

I think it's awesome. I myself would want to move out of enemy range and dodge attacks sometimes. It also is close to reality even though it's just a game.

Yeah your right the old style was better. And this one isn't so bad, just that it is harder to kill the characters in this one. and it is more automated like your not even controling them or something like that.

Yeah, I also had some issues with the combat system at first. It felt like I was letting my characters do all the work, and just sitting back and watching, instead of doing the fighting myself. However, a few hours into the game, I found that I kind of liked it.
I still prefer the old system, but that's probably just because I grew up on Final Fantasy VII, VIII, and IX.

I like the new battle system. It's interactive and it is more challenging. And their gambit system was genius.
