It Was Pleasantly Less Than I Thought

On Saturday night, during our most recent camping trip to Cape Girardeau, MO, we decided to have a beer battered fish fry night, and I of course provided my "famous" beer batter mix.
We had a large group with three campers on site, and so I bought 4 two-pound bags of tilapia, which back home is normally just under $10 a pack at Walmart. When I got to the Walmart in Cape they were priced at the bin around $13 a pack.
Oh well. We were making fish. It was what it was.
I did keep the receipt and gave it another gander when we got home as I was settling the camping trip costs and realized that the price at the bin must have been wrong, and the tilapia was actually the same price it always is. Just under $10 a pack.
Even though I did not technically save $10, knowing I didn't spend $10 more than usual on the total cost of the fish was a pleasant surprise.
As for the fish, it was to die for.
***I was in charge of the fish battering process and my brother-in-law took charge of the frying.***

No good Southerner would ever use tilapia for a fish fry. lol
My favorite is catfish when it comes to fish fries.

@porwest That's how they do fish fries in the Deep South, which thankfully Florida is not part of.
I'm not against tilapia, it is a decent fish for a cheap price, but we used to catch our own catfish and fry 'em up real good. I miss those days.

Tilapia is a good choice at today's prices. Wonder what they were charging for flounder? And it is always a good feeling to know you didn't overpay and feel like you got ripped off, even though you didn't.
Bet that made that tilapia taste even better!!!

Not sure. I have not had flounder in a while, but it's a favorite of mine. I know it's usually quite a bit more than tilapia these days. Tilapia gets a bad rep, but it's not a bad tasting fish at all to me. Whiting on the other hand...I just can't eat it. I also like Swai, and it's similar in price to tilapia.

When I have had tilapia, at a Red Lobster no less, I found it to taste very muddy so your fish fry would not have been for me. I like the cornmeal breading as well.

Wow! looks like it was a good camp and good food to enjoy! Well , at times for the experience , we may forgive the prices of items although the costs would be there in our minds. At end of the day , we would be willing to let go a bit on prices, just to enjoy the experience and have a good time at camps! In your case , luckily the prices were not different . Perhaps , the Walmart store did not update the price properly at the bin. I never had an experience of being part of a camp in my life and well , it remains something in my list. There are few items such as camping trip , cruise etc which remains in my wish list. Well, enjoy the day !
