The Rice Cake

The cake is a lie. While the idiom refers to false promises or unattainable goals, I think it can also be applied to the edible piece of styrofoam known as "rice cake". However, I get a brand from Aldi which is fairly enjoyable. It comes with a hint of roasted flavor that vaguely reminds me of popcorn. So it ain't too bad and it keeps the calories low, about 40 kcal per "cake". I usually spread peanut butter on these "cakes" and this helps me curb both sweet and savory cravings. It's an easier snack to make than your average peanut butter cookie and is more filling. At least that is what I want to believe. Do you ever eat rice "cakes"?

I like some of the flavored ones. The cheese are good, and the chocolate ones are fine.

Only in emergencies. I always want to put them in milk and see if they turn into rice krispies.

I always want to put them in the garbage. Right along with kale.

@TheHorse I always add coffee to my milk, but it shouldn't make much of a difference. If I remember, I'll try and let you know.

@allknowing It's a pretty recent idiom, it originated from a video game where players were promised some cake as a reward, or something along those lines. I didn't know the story until I created this discussion, I just remembered hearing "the cake is a lie" and thought it was the perfect way to describe this food.

@rakski It can look and taste boring but it is not sickly sweet at least. It's really more like popcorn than any "cake".

@Deepizzaguy Have you ever had pop rice as a breakfast cereal? I suppose it's similar, except cereal is usually sweet.

@luisadannointed As I was reading about rice cakes hoping to discover why that sad dry thing above is called a "cake", I saw several REAL cakes from the Philippines. They look very sweet but that's what cakes are supposed to be like. I'm sure they're yummy too.

I am not a fan as it is a bit too bland for me but it is a good snack if you are on a diet.

I don't like them at all. They're a bit like eating cardboard.

@JudyEv They are! But I got a thing for cardboard. I also enjoy having instant oats with just water, that is literally wet cardboard.

@aureategloom If they taste like popcorn, they're a nice snack. Otherwise, I might just eat styrofoam. I haven't had them in a while because I'm busy with that protein powder experiment. I should take a break tomorrow and have rice cakes instead.

@grenery8 Yeah, not really worth the grief unless it's for a diet. It just has less calories but it's nowhere more nutritious than a slice of bread.
