10/13/24 - Update On My Husband

My husband is home.
He had great difficulty getting into the house. His 2nd and 3rd cousins were here to help him into the house.
We had pizza and Chinese to celebrate his homecoming and a belated anniversary. His 2nd cousin (the ex nurse) helped him to the bathroom, etc. After she left, he had to go again and couldn't get off the toilet even with my help. He decided he would get on the floor and crawl back to his chair. He got about 2 feet and couldn't get any further. The kicker was he was naked as he was changing clothes. I had to call 911 and they got him back to his chair.
This is not good. There is a nurse coming this afternoon; and we will see what services she is offering. On Monday a home health aide will. make an appointment with us. I ordered a new walker that I'm hoping will help him stand up; but his legs are still weak. I don't want to see him have to go back to rehab.
His 2nd cousin (the ex nurse) is coming back today as early as she can manage to help out.
We could use all your prayers, support and thoughts. This is not how I was hoping yesterday would go.

No, this isn’t good at all. Please call the VA (or have him call them) on Tuesday (the agency, not the hospital, tomorrow is a federal holiday) to see if they can help put up rails in the house. You’d be surprised how much they can help. They built a ramp for my neighbor across the street for his scooter…and gave him the scooter, too.

Do you have a lifted toilet seat? That would put him in a higher position so he could stand easier. I am glad you have experienced help and bravo for him trying to solve his own problem. You can also get rails around the toilet so he can support himself to stand. There is a kind that are attached to the walls and can be folded up if need be.

@vandana7 They have bedside commodes. If my husband could have stayed, we probably would have gotten one.

There was a riser on the toilet seat. I tried to help him up; but he couldn't stand.

As you've probably read by now, he's in the hospital and will be transferred to another care facility.

Sending him back to rehab won't do him any good. They've reached what they can do in a controlled environment, which is why he's home. When you switch environments, there's always going to be a learning curve and adjustment period. The first few days he'll likely feel week as he adjust to the home environment.
For the first month, George slept a lot. Now he's doing a lot more.

I am so sorry that happened to him and of course to you as well. I hate to say this but maybe you should get him some of those depend diapers that look like underwear, that way he won't need to rush to the bathroom that often.
I really am surprised that the rehab more or less kicked him out when he is not in very good shape.

He has worn them for 8-1/2 months as he was not able to go to the bathroom by himself.

I am sorry that his homecoming wasn't all that it could have been.
They should have had him doing these everyday things on his own before he left the facility.
Hopefully they can place someone to come to your home to assist with this adjustment so that he doesn't have to return to the facility.

@LindaOHio Yep. I did read about that. Unfortunately, I think that's the final straw. I wish it weren't, but I am pretty sure that it is. I really do feel for you.

If he has to go back to rehab, is there a different facility he can go to? The one he was in doesn't seem to have done a very good job.

I'm sorry the day turned out to be so rough. I hope there can be help with strategizing in managing daily life around the house, or that someone can be there to assist, at least for now. Safety first for sure. May the situation improve . . . keeping my fingers crossed!

Well I'm happy to hear that your hubby made it home but sorry that it didn't go as smooth as you had hoped.
I sincerely hope that you can get into a routine and that your hubby is able to maneuver around the house. Guess you will need some help from home health care aides and they will be able to determine exactly what kind of care he will need
