Do you know about the Northern Lights?

THe Aurora Borealis or the Northern lights is a celestial phenomenon are visible in portions of the US and Canada generally in the winter months. For some reason they have been visible in other parts of the country this October. I did not see them. I don't really like going outside here at night. It scares me a bit, but several people here have gotten pictures of the Aurora Borealis in this area? I love the colors.

I have seen them up in Montana, but they rarely make it this far South (California).

I am not sure why they are visible here in Central Virginia. That is crazy, and normally anyway, they are in the winter months.

@TheHorse Could be part of it for sure. I know the weatherman was talking about it one night, but I wasn't really listening. I did read that lots of communications could be disrupted though, satellite outages and what not.

Yes, Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis fascinate me. It makes the skies look so different and visually spectacular. Of course, it could make one feel scary as well. I also think that the Southern Hemisphere equivalent (I think Aurora Australis or something similar ) too would be great but I do not hear that much about it. These lights are perhaps more prominent in Northern parts of Canada and the Nordics- Finland, Sweden etc.

Yes, normally they wouldn't be this far South, and not this time of the year either. Not sure why it is so now..but those who saw them had quite a show, lots of purples and maroons. I should have gone out.

We've seen them a couple of times, not this year, but in years gone by, and it was always in the summer.

I saw them on the weather report on the local news last week. I am afraid of being outdoors alone anywhere in the dark, so I didn't go outside for them. Also, the weather woman said it was sometime around 10 p.m. and I was sleeping and didn't hear about it until the next morning

I really didn't think they would be visible in this area. Turned out I was wrong. I don't like going out after dark here either. Too many animals around and it is just too dark

@LovesEverybody Yikes, I wouldn't want a raccoon living on my porch. I do have a squirrel that visits mine though.

@snowy22315 there are wild animals who live on my back porch. There is a raccoon who lives there and many others. I saw them on the weather and they were beautiful. I didn't know they would come around my area either

My best friend went to Texas to see them really clearly, and the pictures she got were amazing. I couldn’t get myself to care enough to go with her, but I appreciate people who do.

@snowy22315 I didn’t know who to leave my dog with. She’s the one who usually watches her when I’m gone. But the real reason, if I’m 100% honest, is that she was going to camp. I cannot sleep on the ground, because I fully admit I’m wimpy! She told me she regrets not buying an air mattress, but she didn’t really have the money.

I have seen this on my cousin's Facebook post. For 2 years straight, they've been sharing photos online and they had that privilege to see it in Canada where they currently live. I wish I can see this phenomenon myself.

I only seen pictures of it. I would love to see it, but I haven't. It's either too cloudy or raining when something spacey happens.

The Northern Lights are very active right now because of a very large solar storm on the Sun. We used to live on Lake Erie and saw the NL one night. It was spectacular and eerie. Have a good week.

It would be fantastic to experience them, I bet. I know they also make sounds. But I'd probably miss them too if they came close, because I'm either asleep or have my windows closed at night.

I've seen videos of them and yes, the colours are amazing. In the southern hemisphere we have the Aurora Australis or southern lights. You don't normally see them this far north but this year there have been sightings. We saw them once when we lived further south.

I love the color of the northern lights. I heard it showed up last week in Ireland where we used to live more than a decade ago. I hope to see it in the future.
