Did Childhood Tv shows like Tom & Jerry encourage children to act aggressively?

Growing up, my favourite childhood cartoon show was Tom & Jerry. I loved both characters although most cartoons depicted Jerry to be the more sympathetic one. However, recently I read an article stating that Tv shows including Tom & Jerry encourage violence. True, the characters would be constantly running, pranking and hitting each other. The violence was cartoonish and more for laughter. Most children would be able to differentiate between fantasy and reality. I do agree with author that children do like to imitate things and would perceive antics seen in tv shows as funny without considering the consequences. Some of the cartoons when developed was less regulated than what it is today. Perhaps with parental guidance and depending on the children and their behaviour, such cartoon shows can still be enjoyed, helping them to relax and enjoy in a harmless way. What do you think?

I think we can differentiate between cartoon and real violence. After all my younger years of watching cartoons, I never felt the urge to go around hitting people

I think it is important to check the moral values and behavior of a cartoon shows before exposing the kids. Because it doesn't mean that it is a cartoon it is ok for kids, but no! Sometimes cartoon creators create stories to influence the kids on their own beliefs and thinking. That's very sad. That is why we parents should be there when their kids are watching so they can really explain to heir kids what is right and wrong, and most importantly they should research first if the show is really teaching the right values for kids.

Perhaps, it is the era we are living in causing the issues. Thanks for sharing!

I think the difference between back then and today is that we did not have the Internet where so much we see is Real or appears real. A child today may not be able to differentiate between real and cartoons as both can be on your phone/tablet. Back when Tom and Jerry and the Roadrunner and Coyote were on TV..that is all we had was TV and we were told most everything on TV was not Real. Just a thought. Some of th cartoons today are way too much like reality...I worry more about the Cartoons of today, than I ever did back in the day...some are really a little scary real.

I agree, with right guidance. I don't like how children today are so sheltered from everything so they are persuaded that everything has only one side. I always liked tom more, maybe because i liked cats and also didn't like how jerry was toying with him
