When you get an iCloud account you get 5 GB of storage for free. Seems like a lot but I’m almost out of storage.
I get a message in my iPhone’s settings that my iPhone can’t be backed up because I don’t have enough storage. If I want more storage I have to pay.
I can get 50 GB for 99¢/month, 200 GB for $2.99/month, and there are even higher options.
I haven’t caved in yet but I may have to get the 50 GB. $11.88/year is not that bad. I wish I knew what actually backs up into iCloud aside from photos.

Everything. Any text messages, any images or videos you might get sent. Music, t.v. If you go into icloud on your iPhone it'll show you all the things that's stored on there and what's taking up space on your phone. If your apps collect cookies, or anything, that data will also be stored lcally on your iphone. the conbination of both are required to backup.

@lovebuglena There's more to it than that. All apps you use collect data. Photos, music, movies, podcasts, phone calls, text messages, facetime.... everything. Hell, the camera....

For me,5G is enough,i will copy photos or videos from phone to laptop once in a while, therefore,i don't back up much in Cloud storage, you may use a mobile hard disk replace cloud storage to save cost.

If you get a new phone and set up your AppleID on your new phone and not everything that is on your old phone is in icloud I guess it won't be on the new phone?

@lovebuglena ,if we change a phone,we can use a function which was called "phone exchange",this function can transfer all contents on old phone to a new one,we don't have to use icloud.

$11.88 a year is a pretty good deal. I pay $90 a year for automatic backup of my computer. Have a good day.
