Were you named after somone? Are you a namesake?

When a baby is named after someone, it's called a namesake, at least it is here in the US. Wikipedia has this to say to define it~~ ''When namesake refers to something or someone who is named after something or someone else, the second recipient of a name is usually said to be the namesake of the first.'' ''A namesake is a person, geographic location, or other entity bearing the name of another'' When a child is named the exact same name of the parent, first, middle, and last name all the same, often this is then the elder is referred to as ''Sr.'' and the younger is ''Jr.'' There are some that use numerals instead. Instead of using the Sr. and Jr. tags, they might say ''James Robert Smith II'' as an example. Still others simply name their baby after someone they love or admire, a beloved family member, a special friend. Of course some name their child whatever they want to, and they want a brand new name. I was named after a grandmother, and an aunt. My sister was named after a grandmother and an aunt. I named my children after others, at least in some way. My oldest has her aunt's middle name. My youngest son is named after two grandfathers. My youngest girl is named after another two grandmothers. My adopted son had a name when adopted, he added one more name when we finalized the papers, to include a new family member. My very first child who passed away, I named after both of his grandfathers. What about you? Were you named after someone? Did you name your children after someone?

My first name is after a little girl on my parent’s church bus route when they were first married. My sister is also named after a little girl on their church bus route. My middle name is after my paternal grandmother’s middle name. It is spelled Myree, but you pronounce it Marie. It’s spelled the same as that grandmother’s.

That's really neat, I like the spelling of it. I love names that are different.

When I was in grade school, I had a friend named Lenora. I've never known anyone else with that name. I've met one other Lenore, years ago, and now you. It's a neat name!

@MarieCoyle I have been left in a weird situation. I know a little about her family. I contacted one man through Facebook. Nobody else would contact me- they're pretty well to do. It feels like I can't speak with my Grandma's people. Like I am an adoptee. Very odd feeling for me.

@sallypup I'm so sorry they are not more receptive. She was part of your family, it's too bad that some people have to be like that, I'm sure sorry.

My name has a different story. Both my mom and dad have Japanese names. They took "letters" out of each of their names to create my Japanese name - and my sister's as well. They are existing names, but it was just neat how our names came about. Hubby has an English name - he was named after his uncle. Mixing his name with my Japanese name totally did not work out so we did it another way . . . still my kids have Japanese names .

That is indeed a different story. My daughter has a friend named Rhonda, her husband is named Brad. They named their daughter Branda, a combination of both names. I thought that worked for them very well.

@much2say I thought it was special, as they found out after she was born, they couldn't have another child...so it seemed meant to be.

My parents always told me that they choose my name, but after visiting the family plot at the cemetery with my Grandpa, I wondered. Julia Anne is a very common name in my Dad's family. They added my grandmother, on my mother's side, as my middle name. That makes for a long name, 3 in total, but I only use Anne as my middle name except for my passport, health card and driver's license. I try not to use it anywhere else.

@MarieCoyle Yes, but my grandmother's name, my middle name, is Clarissa, and I can hardly spell it and never know if I am spelling it properly. It is an old Belgium name.

@Juliaacv I think Clarissa is a good name, I wonder why it hasn't had a revival among the older names that have become popular again.

That makes it more unique and special, that they added your grandmother's name in. One of my children has an ''extra'' middle name, long story, but he is proud of it.

My middle name is after my uncles middle name and my great grandfathers middle name. Their middle names are Nicholas, and my middle name is Nicole.

I would have to say yes, since I am a Junior and so I share my dad's name. lol. As for me personally, we never had any kids. But if I would have ever had a son, I always wanted to name him Jameson Wesley and would have called him by his middle name.

@MarieCoyle thank you actually I think my parents were expecting a Queen to be born since I was a very late-in-life baby, My full names are Rasma Sandra Zane the third is pronounced differently in Latvia and was attached on because it was a popular Latvian name, Later on professionally I started using RasmaSandra

We didn't intentionally name our boys are anyone but they ended up with both names of Vince's uncle. He was thrilled to bits so we never let on that it was accidental.

I know that my late mom did not want me to be named George Junior so my parents chose the middle name Bernard. My oldest sister was named in memory of my late aunt and the second oldest sister was named after singer the late Peggy Lee.
