Oil in pasta?

The post by Snowy about using a spoon to stop water from boiling over in a pot of food made me wonder about this. I started pouring just a little bit of vegetable oil in a pot that's boiling pasta. It's supposed to keep the sauce from sticking to the pasta which some people like. But I don't want that, so I add the oil. Any opinions on this? I know NJChicaa is rolling her eyes if she's reading this. It's not earth shattering, but I'm just curious.

I used to put a little bit of oil so that the pasta didn't stick together. Have a good day.

I don't like the pasta sticking together, either.

@LindaOHio My neck is my worst pain/problem right now, but waiting for MRI so I can hopefully get an injection. Dale's some better after the back injection for pain in his legs and feet. I haven't had a chance to read your recent post, but any changes in your husband's situation?

I've never done that, but then I don't really have problems with pasta sticking.

@1creekgirl But then I also break up and stir the pasta occassionally. So that plays a role in it.

I add a bit of olive oil after the pasta is cooked and drained. I don't do a cold rinse to cool the pasta off . . . so we use the oil then to prevent sticking while it stays hot.

I've done it both ways. A woman guest yelled at me once cause I didn't salt the pasta water. (She salted all her restaurant meals so I know she really liked a salty flavor.)

@1creekgirl - Never oil in the water where pasta is cooking. Adding oil into the water does not stop pasta sticking together, it will only make the pasta slippery. AND oil does not stop water from boiling over in a pot. Water boils from bottom up, not top down. Oil on top won't do anything.

@LadyDuck I agree with the oil not stopping water from boiling over, but we like our pasta slippery. What can I say, lol?

It reduces some of the starch which is what makes it boil over. Personally, I don't do it. I don't even rinse noodles after they are cooked. But so long as it works for you, why do it differently?

I put oil cause i heard that pasta won't glue so much on a bowl that's bowling.

@1creekgirl in my case, some past gets glued but not all of it.
