Phil Lesh was the bassist for the Grateful Dead, and for several other bands after Jerry Garcia died in 1995. He was a classically trained musician, born here in Berkely in 1940, and joined the Grateful dead in 1965, when they were still the Warlocks. . What's funny about Weir is that he was trained in classical music, and played trumpet and violin, before joining the Warlocks. Jerry Garcia and his mates asked Weir to learn the bass so he could join what Weir's bass playing was influenced by his love of classical music. He went "way up the neck," playing parts of melodies, then returning to more typical, and lower, bass lines. He was the greatest single influence of my own bass playing. I'll attach an article from Rolling Stone about his life. He was 84.

The word “innovator” is thrown around needlessly, but he truly WAS an innovator…mainly because when he started playing bass he didn’t really “know how” to play it! My sympathies are with you, his family, and all of his fans and people that he influenced. A lot of people don’t “get” the deep ties that music brings. You know I know it.

Yep. I actually shed a tear or two this morning. I also learned that he sang lead on a couple of songs I hadn't known about. He rarely sang lead vocals.

84-'that's a good life. Sounds like he had quite a life. Sorry you lost him but be glad he left such a legacy for you to continue to enjoy.

I am so sorry. We have talked lately that all the people from our generation are dying. People are living more now but still reaching 80 is a lot.

@marguicha Yeah, he was a solid dude. A bass lesson with him was on my bucket list. It will not happen. But I have learned a lot simply from watching him play.

Sad to hear this pretty old for a male though. 84 is over 78. That's a full life and a well lived one. Sad but we all will die eventually. I am just glad people got a full life out a musician for once.

Maybe it was the classical (and jazz) influence on his bass playing that drew me to him.

He was the bass player for the best rock 'n roll band in American history! He was also apparently a really good dude. I wish I could have met him.
