Taco Bell: You May Have Lost My Business

It's almost like some businesses are trying very hard to entirely ruin the customer experience and throw customer service right out with the bath water on purpose, and it really makes no sense to me. From a business perspective, it should make no sense to the businesses either. While my wife and I were tooling around running errands with my mom along with us, we decided to make a quick pit stop for lunch at Taco Bell. We ordered from the kiosk, because Taco Bell no longer takes your order in person. You walk in, order from the kiosk and the order is sent to the back to prepare your food. We were there chatting a bit and finally a girl approached the counter and asked, "Can we help you with something?" "No," I said. "We're just waiting for our order." She had this perplexed look. "What order?" she asked, literally asking. "The one I put in through the kiosk." A continued perplexed stare. "What name did you put it under?" "Jim B," told her. "Oh, you didn't pay," she said. I had put my order in on the kiosk and indicated I wanted to pay the bill with cash. "Well no," I said. "I thought you'd bring the food and we'd pay then." But apparently that is not how it works if you order through the kiosk and pay cash. Your order is not sent through. Instead, if you are paying with cash, you must call someone in the back to come forward to let them know you have ordered something and want to pay in cash. Then what's the point of the kiosk and how am I supposed to know this is how it works? I told her I thought the kiosk sent our order back, we'd get our food and settle up. "No," she said flippantly. "That's not how it works. If you don't tell us you ordered something we don't know the order is there if you are paying cash." That's when my demeanor changed. "That's why you have people at the counter taking orders, then there's no question I have ordered something. What's the point of the kiosk if I then have to find someone to tell them I want food? Beyond that, how am I supposed to know this is how it is done?" She pointed to a lit TV board above the counter that said, "If you want to pay with cash, no problem. Just let us know and we'll get your order started." I pointed out that the board that provides this information is above the counter where we no longer can place our orders. "It should be on the kiosk screen." Needless to say, her attitude was extremely rude, and she didn't appreciate my complaint. I was no longer being treated like a paying customer doing business with them. I was being treated like a nobody simply not following the rules they have set as conditions for me to transact business with them. Wwwhhhaaattt??? I am sorry, but this is not how you earn my business and make me feel appreciated. I may be only one guy, but I can tell you this, I won't be eating at Taco Bell again any time soon. This is not how you run a business and certainly not how to treat customers. Whatever happened to a smiling face greeting you at the counter? "Hi, welcome to Taco Bell. What can I get for you?" Now you have a completely sterile environment where I must communicate with an automated process that I still must inform you I have used? This makes no sense.

I would have gone elsewhere immediatly. And by no means return for more ill treatment.

I SHOULD have walked out. You're right. The message would have been clearer if they lost my business right there and then.

I would be ticked too, especially if the girl was rude. Have a good day.

@porwest I totally agree. Customer service is rare these days.

@LindaOHio You would think that would a businesses' cue. Hey, wait a minute, if we make customer service our primary focus when everyone else is abandoning it as a concept, there's our edge we need to win over customers.

Oh, she was terrible, and I don't say that just because I was unhappy with my experience. She is not fit to be in any customer service position. I have been ordering food for nearly 40 years of my life and now I have to learn how to do it? Ridiculous.

Well if you ever visit Daytona, then you don't have to worry about that. Our toco bells do have the kiosks, too but they also have counter people. Sure I might have to wait a minute or two (because they do have drivethru) but I can still order at the counter. You know, I would've likely gone to the counter and waited patiently for someone to come up and not even noticed the kiosk.

I am sure it's on a store by store basis and depends on who the franchisee happens to be. But it's a HORIBLE trend and they ought to think twice about expanding this model.

Haha, sounds about right all this technology is just making things more complicated. I thought technology is supposed to make it simple, no just make us more money is what I think final verdict is.

I am seriously questioning how it is supposed to make my life easier. The way the kiosk should work is it sends my order back, tells them I am paying with cash, and someone comes to ME to get things settled, not force me to use the kiosk and then hunt THEM down to let them know I have ordered something and want to pay with cash.

Almost same with McDonald's here. The difference is that they have still have counter for those paying in cash.nor those who wish to pay at the counter. There's an option at the kiosk to choose paying at the counter

So far, at McDonald's I have noticed here that they have both kiosk and counter ordering and I prefer to order at the counter.

If we had either of those nearby, they'd definitely get my business. I can tell you that Taco Bell will not get it again any time soon.

I think so too. Since when is it my responsibility to tell them I ordered something and ensure it is paid for? I think the kiosk should have sent the order back and notified a worker to come to the front to make sure it was paid for and get the order started.

Arrogant (and stupid) workers are ruining many business. They should be there to smile, help and be kind to the customers, until they have some. I would never go there again for sure. Anyway, file a complain and let them know WHO was rude and not professional.

You are right about that. Unfortunately, I didn't, but I should have. I think it would have sent a clearer message than the one that was received.

Counter service has probably gone the way of the ridiculous minimum wage increases for fast food workers. My guess it's a way to cutting costs, meaning hiring less staff, saving money, hence the kiosk. I also would bet paying by debit or credit is preferred to cash, thus the stupid rule of finding someone to take your order. Pretty soon you won't be able to use cash to pay for anything. I've noticed the one grocery store I go to Foodtown you cannot pay with cash at the self-service checkouts. You must go to a cashier line. Another way businesses save on the transaction costs charged by credit card companies to retailers. Soon enough "Cash will no longer be King" replaced by government controlled "digital currency."

These establishments are just making it harder for customers to do business, and I am not sure that is a good thing. But you're right, part of the reason are these ridiculous wages. What's next? Burger King pensions? As for cash, I want the option to use it. My Aldi is like that. If I want to use the self-checkout, which I rarely do, but will if I only have a couple of things, if I want to use cash I have to go through the checkout. The problem is, when I only have a few things, that's when I want to use cash.

any restaurant that only has a kiosk then they don't get my business as i don't do kiosks. when i get my hair done there is an arby's and my sister and i have go there and they don't even have a kiosk. it is all counter people. we also go because i clip coupons for them and it is cheaper that way!

I am starting to wonder if kiosks won't be everywhere eventually. Not sure how consumers push back on it.

at mcdonald's i got used to pay first but that always irritated me. but this isn't mcdonald's and since you were the only loyal custoemr there, this was a poor service and i am sorry. also, these youngsters really don't know how to communicate with people anymore.
