We all have one of “those” weeks. I had one yesterday. The lowlight was my brother having to send his oldest furbaby to Rainbow Bridge. I’m going to take a deep breath, stay away from the text messages sending me bad news, and give you another song on my list of 100 favorite country songs that made the Billboard charts.
(Oh Baby Mine) I Get So Lonely - Johnnie and Jack
As I’ve mentioned before, I knew Charlie Louvin casually. Being a part of the preeminent harmony duet in country music, he had the perfect description of the tenor singer in this act: “Jack Anglin sang like a B string.”
Johnnie (Wright) and Jack (Anglin) were brothers-in-law (Jack married Johnnie’s sister). They had a string of successful hits in the early 50s, then the Louvins and the Wilburns came along with much prettier harmonies and that was that for Johnnie and Jack. Still, they did manage popularity until the end of the act in 1963, when Anglin was killed in a single-vehicle wreck on his way to Patsy Cline’s memorial service. (They did have one other drawback to their success: Wright’s wife just happened to be “Queen of Country Music” Kitty Wells…)
This was originally a doo-wop/R&B song by a group called the Four Knights. Johnnie and Jack made it 1000% country with their rendition. As much as I love the Statler Brothers, their 1983 cover of this did NOTHING for me, given that they slowed the pace of the song down considerably.
No, this is always an uptempo, fiddle-driven song to me.
(Oh Baby Mine) I Get So Lonely
Written by Pat Ballard
Recorded by Johnnie and Jack
Released as a single, 1954
Peak chart position: #1
Today’s rock song: “My Little Town”
Tossing and turning in my slumber:

Thank you. She was having grand mal seizures, so she sort of “made the decision” for everyone.

@rebelann — I STILL owe him because he took Freckles (the profile picture) to the vet for me when it was “time.” No way I could have done it. One of the very few times I’ve ever heard my brother cry.

I'm so sorry to hear about your brother and his fur baby. That brings tears to my eyes because I know how hard that is.

It is, believe it or not, down on his list of agonies. His brother-in-law is dying of a super-aggressive bone cancer (as in, he was walking around a month ago, we’re waiting for the “phone call” today). Like I said, Sunday was a bad week, all crammed into one day.

@LindaOHio — yeah, it has not been a good week for him. (His bro-in-law passed yesterday morning.)

The cats for me are good because they’re neighborhood cats, so I feed them and make sure they have water in the summer and winter and a little shelter under my back porch. With my allergies there’s no way I could ever have a pet again.

You might like the doo wop version better, without the fiddle.

She was nearly 18, that’s a good long life for any dog. Of course, it still hurts.
Glad you can relate to the song.

Even when you know it’s for the best, and it’s a “no-brainer” about the decision, it still hurts.
Glad you know the song.
