I try to remember who likes what; and, more precisely, who doesn’t like what. So this is not only a headache for Linda, but Jim will hate it because it’s — gasp — a story song! With apologies to both of them, here’s today’s song on the 100 favorite charted country songs list.
Old Dogs, Children, and Watermelon Wine - Tom T. Hall
There’s a magic to someone who can basically tell you exactly what happened one evening and make it sound terrific. That’s what we have here. Tom T. Hall was in Miami for the Democratic National Convention in 1972 and had a conversation with the janitor.
That’s why they called him “The Storyteller.” Some of them are “based on a friend’s account,” and others are complete figments of his imagination. Others, like this one (and the painful “Trip to Hyden,” about going to the town a few weeks after the Hurricane Creek Mine disaster), hit you where you live.
Old dogs care about you, even when you make mistakes
God bless little children while they’re still too young to hate
We need that these days.

Peak chart position: #1
Today’s rock song: “New Orleans Ladies”
I tried it all when I was young:

@wolfgirl569 — I know. I need my iPod repaired (probably a new battery installed). Even the Apple Store looks at me like I have six heads.

He was a master at it, earning that “storyteller” nickname.
