This is rampant in India where criminals pose as officers and threaten the public in such a way that they are forced to part with huge sums of money.
I got a warnning from a police officer - a well known personality - in my mail. But I just ignored it I was accused of watching child pornography
For a moment I got petrified as I do not do such things This mail came in my spam folder which automatically gets deleted after a few days. I let it to automatically get deleted. But it did give me a couple of slleepless nights.
Nothing happened

And to think some fall in the trap. Wonder why they too just ignored those messages.

@LadyDuck One thing good our government has done is to educate everyone that arrests are not conducted online.
You knew the differencfe but there are many who do not and fall prey

@allknowing - I remember that we received a fake one masked as the "Federal Police" pretending we did not pay a fine. The police never sends e-mails here and we do not have a Federal Police, but a Cantonal Police.

It's pretty common in the U.S. too. It's often changed to saying you owe the IRS money or you could go to jail (which is a real thing but they would never reach out over the phone or by e-mail) Or there's a warent for your arrest and you can get out of it if you pay x amount of money which is obviously not true.

@allknowing Yeah. The worst one is IRS claims because that can actually happen. Sometimes you have to pay taxes each year.

I once got a call on a Saturday morning telling me an officer was coming to arrest me.
I was petrified until I called my sister who told me that is a scam going around
