How do you know when it's time for grocery shopping?

I try to keep diverse foods here. Right now I have pasta and olive oil, some frozen dinners, Summer sausage and cheddar cheese, among other things, all ready for action. But when certain things run out, I automatically go to the store. And that's what I am going to this morning. Among my "can't be without" items are coffee, eggs, bacon (or hash, when I get tired of bacon), and some form of buillon or chicken soup. Right now I am out of bacon, and almost out of eggs, so off to the store I go. I will also pick up some crackers to go with my Summer sausage and cheddar cheese. When do you know it's time for some grocery shopping?

When I can’t picture what I’m having for lunch the next day, I order groceries that night.

I like to go shopping for fresh food once a week. I know that I need to go because I buy exactly what covers one week.

@TheHorse - I keep things in the freezer "just in case" I cannot go shopping. I always store pasta and rice for several months as well as some canned food. Fresh fruits and vegetables are not good after more than one week.

I raised a houseful of kids, so I still have some of my shopping habits from that time. I go once a month for everything that doesn't spoil, etc. and pantry items. I keep a running list, when I know things are going to need replenished that are things I cook with constantly, they go on the list. I shop sales. I go once a week for fresh produce and milk and anything on sale I think we will be needed, meats, etc. It's a proven fact that the more often a person goes, the more they spend....and I honestly don't like to go to the store constantly. It's just easier plan on the once per month and once per week thing for me.

@TheHorse I could tell that by reading your posts for the time I have been on mylot. Working, and caring and feeding a family, takes some juggling.. I cannot even imagine how much fast food it would take to feed a few teenage boys on a regular basis. Plus a ton of money...luckily, I like to cook!

@MarieCoyle Thank you for your idea of a running list for groceries. I am trying to not spend as much money on what i eat

With my budget, I can shop for groceries online only once a month when my SS arrives. Then I just have to manage until the following month, Right now I have more of seasoned fries and tater tots in my fridge than anything else but I will manage till Nov 9

What is summer sausage? We usually go shopping once a week if we are able. But our fridge is never full, unless our mothers give us a lot of stuff.

I put in an online order at Walmart every week. I tend to get the same basics each time. My food budget tends to run about $35-50 per week. Have a good weekend.

@TheHorse Probably so. I get lunch meat, bread, protein bars, muffins...I don't need frozen dinners. There's a ton of those in the freezer.

For me, there is always a need to replace something. I keep a list and when something runs out I of course put it on the list. Then I know where the best price happens to be on the items on my list. So, where I go depends on what I need more of at a particular store. Generally, I go to the store once a week, but it's usually a different store when I go depending on what needs to be replaced at the best price.

We do a regular shop about every 4 to six weeks, topping up some of the longer life items or anything that's run out. We can get odd bits like bread and milk from a small shop across the road. Outside of that, we know we need to do grocery shopping if we run out if beans or cat food

In my case it depends when an item is low on quantity. I do not order all at one go.

My Dad loved Cream of Wheat cereal. I think it soothed his stomach plus we had cream from the cow to help. Today I went food shopping. We were out of bread and protein stuff and vegies.

I have essentials like fruits, vegetables etc which would last for approximately 2 weeks. I would buy those every 2 weeks. Rest of the items is mostly monthly combined with these or as and when needed. In case there are good offers and discounts, there are few purchases made. However , it is all planned usually for me. Unplanned purchases are rare and happens in case we have some occassion or guests. So , in a way I am aware of what is needed and what gets over. In this way, I have a better utilization and consumption rate for all the items purchased. Had failures in case of sudden travels and all of these would topsy-turvy. Good to know your style of grocery shopping. Have a nice weekend!
