What does ‘stealing the election’ mean?

I need some help here from my American contacts. On the news this morning it was reported that Donald Trump has accused the Democrats of trying to ‘steal the election’ from him and the Republicans. Does he just mean that they are trying to win the election – as is the case in any normal election where surely everyone is doing their best to garner as many votes as possible? Except that he regards himself as already the rightful winner and therefore if anyone else does better than him they must have ‘stolen’ his rightful place??

@fleura Perhaps one ought to report the intent to commit the crime of stealing to the appropriate authorities.

It's hard to prove intent, normally one has to wait until a crime is actually committed.

In some ways, I think ONE of THE biggest reasons the left has feared him winning more than anything is that if he DOES win, he might open a very deep and large scale investigation into what happened in 2020, and the left definitely has something to hide that they are terrified will actually get out and become known. It's a bit tin-hatty, I admit. But you have to wonder why they have gone so hard after Trump trying anything they can to remove the possibility he is ever in the White House again. NEVER in the history of this country has a former president or presidential candidate been threatened with jail. EVER. They are not afraid of a threat to democracy. They are afraid a very big cat might be let out of the bag which could damage their party standing and trust for decades.

Perhaps he's sowing the seeds ready for if/when he loses.

Trump said that when he lose to Biden. He will say the same thing if he loses again.

The Tories were accused of trying to steal the last election with things like needing photoID and trying to purge voter rolls

Trump is insinuating that the 'other party' is cheating to win the election.

He thinks that he was supposed to have won last election. He may say that again this election if he loses.

As usual, he is accusing the Democrats of doing something fraudulent to win the election. He is lying and doesn't know what he's talking about. Have a good week.

Before the election, all candidates have the right to campaign, although in some places black campaigning is not permitted. The legitimate winner will only be obtained after the valid votes are counted
