Along with that strange cafeteria on the pop side (that’s living up to the name pop today) I’m giving you my 100 favorite country songs that made the charts. This side is a little (okay, a lot) more straightforward. No wild swings over here. Here’s today’s song. Sea of Heartbreak - Don Gibson Hey, doesn’t this sound great with a Perry Como tune? Actually, this also made the top 30 on the pop charts. You can hear that it’s not nearly as country as some of the other songs (with a piano run by Floyd Cramer that doesn’t sound anything like what you expected out of Floyd Cramer, and the vocals by the Anita Kerr Singers). But that doesn’t mean it won’t give some people a migraine. This has always been one of my favorite songs, period. I’ve found nothing in the past 58 or so years to take it off this list. Sea of Heartbreak Written by Hal David and Paul Hampton Recorded by Don Gibson Released as a single, 1961 Peak chart position: #2 (also charted #21 in Hot 100) Today’s rock song: “Round and Round” Oh, what I’d give to sail back to shore:

Two great songs you've picked today! In my not-so-humble opinion.

He had a voice that had a slight Elvis-y feel to it.

I like folk songs more because they are more expressive.

I feel that songs that are made for the purpose of being expressive are much better than the ones that are made for the purpose of making money. If they do both, great for the singer and the songwriter, but I’d rather have the expression.
