It Could Have Been a Beheading

Usually when you go to a casino, there are few memorable moments, unless you hit it big or something. A thing that has never really happened to me except for one time in Vegas hitting a $400 loot, but of course, that's not life changing money. My wife's biggest win that I can ever recall was also in the $400 range. But there was one time when we were at "the boat" in East Saint Louis and we were walking past the blackjack tables when we saw an elderly man walking toward us. It suddenly dawned on us that he had his telephone cord lanyard around his neck, and it was stretching out quite long, and we didn't catch it right away, but quickly realized that his player's card was still inside the slot on the machine he had been playing when he walked away. It must have stretched about 6 or 7 feet when we noticed it, and he was completely oblivious. "Sir. SIR," I said. "You are still attached to the machine." He didn't immediately understand, but then he realized his mistake. It got a good laugh and even the blackjack dealer made a joke, "That could have gone badly." Being I also have a bit of a sense of humor I remarked someone could have lost their head if that thing would have disconnected and got flung through the air attached to that springy cord. It was certainly a memorable moment.

Years ago, Juanita and I were having lunch at Fallsview Casino when an earthquake occurred. Juanita admonished me to stop shaking the table...

@porwest It was interesting, to say the least. A friend in Hamilton at the time thought she was just having another seizure, but her hubby didn't feel a thing.

@BarBaraPrz I have been through small quakes when I lived in California for a spell, but never anything major. Luckily.

Stretched wires that are suddenly released could do all sorts of damage.

This thing was stretched quite thin. If it would have come out with that telephone cord lanyard, it would have hurt someone for sure.

I wonder if the “bookies” issued odds of a beheading happening? I would have placed a few bets on that! Lol

@moffittjc Not untrue. Gamblers will take a gamble on everything, and where there's money involved, someone will let you place bets.

If there would ever be a place where exactly that would occur, it would be in a casino. lol

It happens quite often that people leave their cards in the slot machine. Heck it happened to me. But I realized it quickly and went to get the card back. Maybe having a string or a cord helps. But I’ve never seen someone wear it around their neck while the card is inserted into the slot machine.

@porwest have you seen the card in the machine while at the same time being on the string and around the person’s neck?

It's one thing to leave the card in the machine, but another to have it attached to a lanyard you have wrapped around your neck. But yeah, I see this all the time where someone has the card around their neck. Maybe it's a Midwest thing. lol

Would he be allowed to keep the winnings if he’d won while NOT sitting at the machine?

I mean, if he's not at the machine and already cashed out, I guess it wouldn't be his money.

I am sure the card, had it become detached, probably wouldn't have really done all that much damage. But I imagine it could have at least left a nice mark. lol

Probably my most memorable casino-related moment was when I lived in MN. In my free time I liked to explore the countryside, but I wasn't organised enough to go to a regular camp-site; they all seemed to be booked up months in advance, and since I never knew how far I might travel in a day, I just gave up on that idea and would park up in some quiet spot and spend the night in the back of my old truck instead. And one morning when I had just got up and was enjoying the quiet dawn beside some lonely lake, along came a man who also fancied a bit of quiet contemplation, and he told me he had won some money in the casino. He actually had one of those giant cheques they present you with for publicity purposes! I had never seen one of those before. I can't remember how much he won but I do have a photo of him with it somewhere!

I'm glad you caught it! You know about my most memorable moment. I was just going to change machines; and a man came and sat down in front of it. He won jackpot after jackpot. It still irks me! lol Have a good day.

good thing you told him that my "gambling" experience is: getting 5KM (like 2 USD) on scratch
