11/8/24 - Update On My Husband

Got a call from the social worker. I guess the insurance company is making noises about my husband's stay in the facility. She says they may ask for his discharge today. I spoke with my husband; and he said he's not strong enough to come home. The social worker said he can walk 130 feet with a walker, climb steps, etc. I told her when he came home he was home for less than 24 hours and fell 3 times.
Another reason he can't come home is that he has an 18" Foley inserted in him and is carrying a bag. He must keep that in until a doctor's appointment more than a week away. At that time he will get a diagnosis.
Would appreciate any prayers and thoughts. Thank you for your continued support.

Wel, if you can get off the phone to the other 20,000 people, call the insurance company and ask why. And pretty please call the VA?!

The insurance company gets reports from PT which tells them that Mr. Ohio is walking 130 feet with the walker and doing steps, etc.; so they say he can go home which we know isn't true.

If he is eligible for VA please call them. They have been good to help us.

There is a lot of paperwork that must be filled out for the VA. My husband didn't want me to do it; but maybe I will.

At this point, you need all the help you can get. He doesn't have to know...I know you always run everything by him first, but care is important, and you need to utilize every single resource you can find at this point.

Oh no, I thought he was supposed to get 100 days there. I guess it is back to the old facility. Your poor hubby..

He gets 100 days IF they don't feel that he's ready to go home.

@sallypup I totally agree. If she could have seen him fall when he came home, she'd have a different opinion.

He can stay long term where he is or at the previous facility.

Did you ever call any of the numbers I left for you? This could get pretty serious. The insurance company must have a number of days that are the average and then past that they start wanting to get them discharged. I think Four Walls has a good idea.

I've spoken with the Council on Aging. Some of the ones you gave me don't pertain to us. I'm going to fill out the VA forms.

But what happened with the 100 day coverage? What is that social worker talking about . . . she could so easily be disproved. If the insurance company is making noises, then I would make noises right back . . . that wouldn't be right to simply discharge him now in the condition he is in. That's not fair that you are not even given time to prepare for this either. Sending hugs .

@LindaOHio I'll bet it's all about the money - they don't want to pay out anymore . I almost wouldn't trust that social worker to speak on your behalf . . . fight the insurance companies and tell them those reports are definitely incorrect.

The insurance company doesn't care that my husband doesn't feel strong enough to come home. All they care about are the reports that they get from physical therapy saying that he can walk with a walker, do stairs, etc.

What a person can do when they are in a controlled environment and when they are home are two different things. I can see where they're coming from. Cathadar is easy to manage at home. You can hook the bags on the walkers.

@LindaOHio Well, the problem is, what you think "isn't strong enough" and what a doctor or rehab center think aren't the same. You said he can walk 130 feet with a walker and can climb stairs. That's more then most people need to get around most homes easily. If you're fear is his falling (because to assume he'll never fall again isn't realistic) you can ask them, or he can ask them to pratice falling and getting up from a fall. Once he does that, then he'll have the tools he needs to get himself up if he falls at home.
It would also benifit you and his cousin to sit in on his therapies and learn how to help him up if he does fall. You can also tell them more about the hazards in your home and have him pratice working around those.
No place is going to accept him or keep him, if he's met their goals.

@kaylachan There was something wrong with him when he came home. He was so weak. He did have a UTI. The nurse that came to see me said that could be the cause of his weakness.

@MarieCoyle I believe that holds true, they need to be cleaned regularly and monitored.

I think that a nurse has to check his catheter daily. I can't picture trying to take care of that and his other problems unless there was a medical person at the house with him if he went home...and he would need full time care.

My son was due to be discharged last summer from the hospital, after a surgery. They kept him two more days, as they were monitoring his catheter to be sure he wouldn't have a problem, which he had before. They told me then it had to be checked by a doctor or nurse, every day? I think that's standard.

That is crazy to just say they're going to discharge him when it's obvious he still needs care especially if he has a bag. I really thought insurance was back to covering his stay there.
All my thoughts and prayers are with you Linda.

Insurance only cares about the reports they are getting from physical therapy....that he can walk with a walker, do stairs, etc. We all know how that turned out when he came home for a day.

I should not doubt the social worker, but something is screwy here. He can walk 130 feet?? Somehow I have a really hard time believing that.I remember your description of getting him from the car to the house when the cousins were trying to come inside and that wasn’t long ago. If they are wanting him out, right now long term seems to be his only option. He can’t come home and they are not managing his condition well there, not to mention the catheter. If they don’t give him a shower for days and days, can they be trusted to care and maintain his catheter. In the proper manner. He can’t come home without full time care, and you are not well enough to do that.

I have had to advocate at times with my son's medical issues, when he was too sick to speak for himself. It's not easy. I am so sorry, Linda.

You would think after all he's been through they would
know he's not in good shape to go home, but it's all about $
not peoples health I would speak my voice on this.
I would let them know what's on my mind & make it
known he's health is in their hands.

@LindaOHio that's what I'm talking about
once you let them know your not happy about their
lack of service & threaten them with a law suit it helps.
