Well, at least things are normal on this side of the list. For today’s country song I’ll keep that smooth, mellow voice going (as @JudyEv commented about Vern Gosdin yesterday, “This guy has a great voice”) as we venture onward in the list of my all-time favorite songs to make the country music Billboard chart.
The Shelter of Your Eyes - Don Williams
As I’ve mentioned a time or 600, Jim Reeves is my all-time favorite singer. He died when I was four, so there were Reeves-like singers that filled the bill as I grew up. One of them was Jim Ed Brown (who once said that Reeves told him that, should anything happen to him [Reeves], RCA would take him [Brown] and “make him the next Jim Reeves”). Don Williams was definitely the other.
This was Don Williams’ very first solo single. (As @TheHorse told you a few weeks ago, Williams was a member of the folk group the Pozo Seco Singers before his successful country music career.) And wow, what a debut single!! He wrote this and delivered a great love song with a voice that the country music world came to love for 40 years, landing him in the Country Music Hall of Fame.
Wow, what a love song.
The Shelter of Your Eyes
Written by Don Williams
Recorded by Don Williams
From Don Williams Volume One, 1972
Peak chart position: #14
Today’s rock song: “Sartorial Eloquence”

He had one hit that crossed over, “I Believe in You.” He also did “Tulsa Time” before Eric Clapton.

I love everything Don Williams has ever sung. I love this one (gets stuck in my head from a playlist), but my very favorite is Lay Down Beside Me.

I love his version of “Amanda” (which was also on the list) so much that I just can’t take Waylon’s version at all…and I love Waylon!

You might like this guy’s voice if you could remove the dobro in the background.
