Here in the US, Thanksgiving is November 28. Many families have big dinners with friends and relatives. It's never been a big celebration with us because when the kids were married, they would go to inlaws for Thanksgiving, and to our house for Christmas. I used to cook a big meal at Thanksgiving when they were young, but we always wanted them home for Christmas. That was when we had a big dinner with family and sometimes friends. The kids always spend Christmas Eve here and we open gifts together on Christmas morning. Do you celebrate a big Thanksgiving? Any routines with special memories?

Things have changed a lot since my mom got dementia. We used to go to both my mom’s family and my dad’s family, on the day before Thanksgiving and actual Thanksgiving. Now, my sister goes to her husband’s family and my dad goes to his wife’s family on Thanksgiving Day. I stay home and watch football with my sweet Chihuahua. The day after Thanksgiving is the day my sister and her family come to my dad’s house for our official family Thanksgiving. This year, due to a time crunch for my sister, we’ll be celebrating the Saturday after Thanksgiving. We all have a great time!

@1creekgirl That’s special, isn’t it. Family time, at any time, is something I want to soak in.

This year my husband's 2nd cousin is making a dinner to take to the rehab facility. We will have dinner together while she goes to a friend's house for dinner. We used to get the turkey and some fixings from Giant Eagle; and then my hubby would make more sides and pies. Have a good week.

my sister says that turkey this year is very reasonable in price at Walmart. She went there on Monday night to get the turkey when she was getting other groceries the grocery store where I go sometimes sent me mail to say that if $300 I could get a free turkey! In other words a $300 turkey is not really free!

Yes, we usually get together with family members. It was funny you mentioned this because I was just on the phone trying to straighten out the reservation situation. I made a motel reservation for friend, (I will be staying elsewhere) and they gave me a motel other than what I requested. It is nearby though, not really that big of a deal. They weren't able to change it.

WE don´t celebrate Thanksgiving in our country. But I love your celebration. Of all the traditions that we don´t share with you, this is the one I like best.

@1creekgirl No leftover on Christmas day. Christmas Eve was always no meat, while on Christmas day we had different meats.

Thanksgiving was always a big family gathering for us . My daughter took over when she got married and has carried on the tradition for years. We all bring food so there's always more than we need but everyone goes home with leftovers. I can't believe how close Thanksgiving is.

When my kids were young, we would cook a real big Thanksgiving meal. There would be around 20 or more people there. Now that my kids grown and have a family, most of the time they celebrate Thanksgiving at their own house. My oldest son and I were talking what to cook this year for Thanksgiving, since there will not be very many people coming. We have desided to have loaded potato soup, potato flake sourdough bread, rotisserie chicken and a carrot cake.

@1creekgirl Yes, I used to make it a lot back in the early 80's and then my starter went bad. When I was given the starter, it just had the steps to keep feeding the starter and making the bread. How to make the starter was not included. I finally found the directions to make the potato flake starter, so I'm crossing my fingers that it will turn out right.

There was a time in my childhood when we had big family get togethers for all those holidays . . . our (parents') house was always for Thanksgiving. But through the years with all the families doing their own thing, it just became "our family" for the holidays.

We don't celebrate Thanksgiving here. We spend Christmas Eve with the whole family (inlaws go to our house). We open gifts together. Simple dinner, attend mass. Then we usually have a big lunch outside.

I used to love celebrating Thanksgiving and making the turkey and food. Moved to Latvia where they have no Thanksgiving and expensive turkeys. Now I just enjoy the day like any other.

Thanksgiving, tied with Christmas, is my favorite holiday. I love having all the family here and hosting. However, since all my kids are grown, we are kind of scattered on Thanksgiving. We used to alternate between my mom's house and my husband's family. We still go to my husband's family every other year. Ever since we had to place my mom in assisted living (she has dementia and is sometimes violent), our year to be with her has just been in different places and we were not together. This year, though, my oldest daughter's mother-in-law invited us to all be together at her house. I am so thankful for that. My husband, brother, and I had planned on just having a small Thanksgiving here at the house, but now we get to be with the kids and grandkids too.
