Five out of seven of Vince's family attended the memorial service

I wrote about attending a memorial service in a small town. Vince’s great-uncle enlisted from that town and was one of those who were killed in France in World War I. There is now a memorial rose garden there and the photo shows Vince and four siblings in front of the plaque commemorating their relative. There were seven in Vince’s family. One sister has passed away and one brother lives in Bali now so five out of seven was a pretty good turnout for the family.

They all resemble each other quite a bit, especially Vince and the one to the left of him.

@JudyEv The one with the cane, his sister and the one on the far right all have the same mouth. Vince and the other have similar shaped faces and eyes.

In some earlier photos they were all very much alike. the eldest has the stick, then comes my SIL then the other three are lined up in age going from left to right. There is about 18-24 months between each of the three on the right.

@JudyEv We hoped never to see wars, but I fear wars will forever exist.

It is a small thing for us really, when you think about the one who gave up his life.

@LadyDuck It's very sad what some had to put up with for the rest of their lives.

An excellent turn-out! i wonder what Great-uncle (and all the other young men) would have thought if they could have imagined that 100 years later their relatives would be commemorating their sacrifice.

So many saw enllisting as their only chance to see anything of the world other than their own little patch. Another example of be careful what you wish for.

The only time we got together was for one our niecie's wedding. We were a great number - right up to the fourth generation.

As there are more and more relations, then it becomes harder to get together.

We have to make the most of these opportunities as we don't really get together all that often.

We get to see one another quite often but it's not so often that all five are together.

We have to make the most of the photo opportunities as they are all getting older and developing health issues.

Once they start reading out a dozen or so names, it really starts to hit home how many never made it back.

For such a small town, there were a lot of people there and a group of schoolchildren turned up too.
