To Curse or not to Curse

I realize that this opinion is unpopular. I realize that this will provoke people to calling me names and criticizing me. But I am gonna say it anyway, just as I have on every other platform: Christians should refrain from using profanity. It is becoming more acceptable and celebrated for Christians to use profanity, tell dirty jokes, and laugh at immoral conversations. There are many who speak the name of Jesus one moment and spew out nasty garbage and curse words the next. What is most heartbreaking and scary are the numbers of Christians who listen to or speak curse words coupled with God's name. What ever happened to treasuring the name of Jesus? Our speech, as believers, should represent our love for the Savior and be acceptable to Him. Colossians 3:8 "But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth." James 3:10 "From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so." Ephesians 5:4 "Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving."

I do not curse or words that use profanity. I tried when I was in high school since I heard a lot of my peers doing that. But I cannot. To me, it feels off. It is not something me and my siblings were used regardless of the situation.

That's great. That's a sign of self-control.

@gnatsmom my daughter has the same feeling with the cursing. She's teenager and her peers are cursing right and left

@rakski Two of my kids never curse. The other two have allowed others to affect them and they curse occasionally. But I just pray that God will convict them of the things that are wrong. They are adults and answer to Him now. I am proud of all my kids, but there are two that need to guard their speech better. There are areas where I need to be more obedient to Scripture. God is showing me that. Happy to hear your daughter takes her speech seriously.

They are just words. I have no issue with profanity. Like anything, so long as it is in moderation, it's fine. We're all adults. We can be adults. Now, if it's every other word? That's different. But no need to be prudish. People tend to dislike prudes.

I don't care if people dislike me. This is the response I always get. I don't care, because I will never compromise my love for God and my disdain for hearing His name used in vain or coupled with curse words. Cursing doesn't make one an adult. Words are not just words. From beginning to end, the Bible speaks of the power of words and gives commands on how we should speak. I have even been convicted on some of the slang words I have used. As a Christian, I want them all to be pleasing to the Father. To me, "prudish" is a compliment. So, thank you. And I am not saying that sardonically. I embrace that adjective.

There will always be people that do that.

I know. I just don't understand how Christians can do it so easily.

even if it’s not related to religion - it’s more polite to avoid such words. still, one can’t help but use them sometimes
