I did find out that since covid he was hurting for money and his business partner sold the two trucks that he owned. So my nephew sold his two trucks since he needed money. Than no trucks so they decided to rent a u-haul to use. That was costing them to much for the rental fees. So he borrowed money to buy another truck and bought his partner share out. The partner left but he took all the tools and equipment that he had paid for and left. So now he had a debt that he did not have before. Than he was getting no jobs because of covid and half the equipment was gone. He did not tell his wife anything about what was going on. He got behind on the house payments and they are going to loss the house. He was at that time drinking and doing drugs. So he was using the house payment to drink, smoke, vape and do drugs. His Mom told me all of this in a phone call today. His wife has applied for Social Security which she will be getting next month for her and the kids. So she has been told she can sell the house by the bank. Anything above what is owned on house she can keep. She will not have enough to keep the house. So beyond that she does not know what she is going to do. Just my opinion but I would have know something was wrong when he sold the two trucks. I hope she will go look for a job to support those kids. You only get Social Security until the youngest child turns 18.

It is and it makes me wonder how many other small business loss everything because of covid. His wife should have realized something was wrong. But now is not the time to be blaming her. Help her instead.

What a tough situation for this young family to be in. It's sad it down spiraled to this point. I hope they will be able to work things out, but yah, they have a rough road ahead.

That is not a good situation for the her and the kids. Though they might get Social Security, we don't know if it can be enough and just like you said it will stop after the child gets 18. I really hope she can find a job.

What a shame he didn't confide in his wife or someone. There might have been a way out of his problem. It's too late now.

Does he still have "a week to live"? How much life insurance is he carrying, if any? Will that help his wife keep the house?

When he passes she should get the widow's pension, which isn't alot, but it would help.

I thought everybody worked in the US. How many kids, and how old are they...and yes, it is a nasty situation....still selling the truck and equipment, paying the house dues to keep the house might be a better choice...thereafter, both can take up small or big jobs ...to bide time...once the payments on home are clear new debts can be raised for the vehicle...taking more than one debt simultaneously is always a risky proposition.

It is important in a marriage for one person to control the finances, BUT at the same time, the one who is not in charge should never be in the dark about what's going on behind the scenes. What a terrible situation, but of course your nephew chose solutions that only exacerbated the problems. It is unfortunate.
