We didn't enter the building looking for a fight

I look back at this last political scene; I remember the news reporting. I remember nasty invectives being spat out; violent word pictures spewed like we were all in a prize fight not a challenge to see who would come out on top.
And as I look back I also remember other days. Times when I walked into a room that held maybe eight to a dozen strangers, all sitting around on uncomfortable chairs. One would start the twelve step meeting. We would go through the litany of reading from a book, one person would read a passage then pass the book to the person next to them. And at the end if a person wanted to say something, that person did. That person either sat or stood up and let 'er rip. Out would come pain and deep thought and sometimes a funny story. That person was NEVER laughed at, commented on, interrupted or anything else. That person was heard. That person was just that: a person worthy of dignity, worthy of being listened to. That being quietly heard somehow bolstered everybody in the room and we all came out feeling united and better somehow.
I also went to writer's meetings. We critiqued each other's works. That means that we participated. We heard and listened. We respected each other. When we gave our opinion it was a thoughtful considerate opinion. NO on meanness. NO on mocking or other juvenile language. Sometimes what was said about my work wasn't always what I wanted to hear but I was given a respectful why and often a how on what the person speaking meant.
I am sad that this election business has been sullied by violent juvenile language. I am sad that meanness is apparently becoming the norm. I am sad that role models for the children have been left behind. I hope that some day soon Light will prevail and people will stop and listen to their fellow Americans, one adult to another. One brother and one sister in one cosmopolitan family.

I too wish we could see our president as a good role model. I don’t get into politics at all but from the things I’ve heard he doesn’t sound a role model for our country at all.
I have a friend who unfriended anyone on Facebook that she knew voted for Trump. A bit extreme to me and I would have been very sad to have lost her friendship if I had voted that way. I didn’t vote at all. Too much crap I don’t know what to believe is true about each candidate.
I love what you wrote about the book readings and how they ran. Very neat!

@wolfgirl569 oh I definitely get that too people can be so nasty. That wasn’t the case with this though. She and I are quite close. She told me she valued my friendship but if I voted for trump she would have to unfriend and block me.

Years back when Obama was running I unfriended a few. But it was the ones that were name calling if you supported this one or that one. I didn't care who they supported. But disrespect didn't have to be tolerated.

That is one reason that our world is going mad since like you said good role models do not exist anymore in dealing with acting polite in a discussion.

It's really sad how this world's become. The same people who helped durring hurricane efforts are devided because their canidate didn't win. We have Ivy league schools cuddling students because Trump won. One FIma person was accused of telling her staff not to check homes that had Trump signs in their yards. What the actual F? When did we start to care more about protecting feelings then teaching people how to behave like civilized adults.

@kaylachan I agree with you on how sad the world is. I would be leery of folks who had Trump signs in their yard though I would still try to help them. I was almost run off the road by a Trump flag waving lady.

@kaylachan I agree. I like dogs. I ran into a car bumper sticker that had a yellow dog and the word Democrat on it. I liked it so I put it on my car. In my mind, that is no reason to ride my bumper, honking, as I slowed down to turn into a parking lot. I don't think I was the one doing wrong.

I avoid political discussions here for obvious reasons. Have a good day.
