Howdy and welcome to your respite from country music, the “Hot 100” list of my favorites. Hey, today’s country song is more folk. Still, if that’s not your style, this will get your toes tapping. How this was not a major hit is beyond me. But it wasn’t. Here it is.
Someday, Someway - Marshall Crenshaw
You look at that screen grab and think, “Hey, he looks a little like Buddy Holly.” You’re right. He played Buddy Holly in La Bamba. In tribute to that, every time I’ve seen Marshall Crenshaw live he’s done a Buddy Holly song.
This was his first single from his first album. The song, and the entire album, are masterpieces. Many years ago I did a countdown of my favorite debut albums. With all my love of the Eagles, Poco, CCR, John Prine, Warren Zevon, et. al., you’d think one of them would have been #1 on that list. No. THIS album was #1. A friend labeled it “the perfect power pop album,” and I can’t disagree in any way. I can still put this album on and cruise with the sincere hope that there are no cops around when “Rockin’ Around in NYC” or “She Can’t Dance” come on.
Alas, Crenshaw’s throwback music just wasn’t made for the techno/hair band 80s. I think this was his ONLY charted single, and it barely cracked the top 40. That’s okay…makes it relatively easy to get a ticket to his concerts.
It’s also a sterling example of how “good” and “popular” are NOT synonyms.

Aren’t you glad this is almost over so you can get back to one daily “regular” song you don’t know?!

He’s got the voice to pull off “Pretty Woman.”
