Unknown outside their own countries - maybe

We sometimes catch part of a TV show while we are waiting for one we always watch. It is Long Lost Family. Some of these stories are very harrowing. One we caught was about KT Tunstall who has quite a distinguished musical background and career. She was put up for adoption at 18 days old and, in the Long Lost Family show, she is reunited with two sisters. Unfortunately, her birth father had died before KT got the chance to meet him. She has written songs for films and put out a number of albums. But what intrigues me is that I’d never heard of her and I wonder how many outside of her own country are familiar with her. I’ve noticed the same with Australian artists that might be very familiar to me and seem ‘important’ but then no one outside of Australia has ever heard of them. The photo is of Eric Bogle, quite well known in Australia but not quite so well known overseas. He wrote ‘And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda’, ‘No Man’s Land’ and a number of others. He performed at our Music Shack concerts three times and the photo was taken at our Donnybrook place.

It’s interesting how artists can be highly celebrated locally but remain largely unknown internationally, despite impressive achievements.

That's so true. Some Aussies who have starred in quite a number of films are unknown overseas.

I am bad with names so my son asked me if I knew a certain kid name Waylon at school and I said the only name I could think of that goes with that first name Jennings. He laughed and said Waylon Jennings is a celebrity. Oops

Haha, yes. .I've heard of Waylong Jennnings too. We've had to learn a lot of names in the village but we're still struggling with some of them.

Probably the Waltzing Matilda you sang in school was a different one to 'And The Band...' which is an anti-war song. We learnt the other two you mention too.

Until a decade ago, most of our friends had never heard of Eric Bogle but they knew 'And The Band...'. KT is obviously quite a big name so I was a bit surprised I had never heard of her. She wasn't just a two-bit cabaret singer. Well done you!

I have watched that show before and it's emotional...whether they find their family or not. I did enjoy the stories, and the reunions that take place, too.

@JudyEv You may remember one of my sons is adopted. He knew who his birth mother was, but not his birth father. He thought he would hurt my feelings if he searched for him, but I encouraged him for a long time to do that. He still hesitated, as he feared it could end badly, and he might open up a can of worms he didn't want. Finally, he did register with Ancestry. After a few months, he got a match that said a man was his paternal uncle. No father listed. He contacted the uncle and eventually found his father, the brother of the uncle. His father had absolutely no idea he even existed. None. It seems his father had finished up his basic training and before he was deployed, he had a fling for a month or so with a young lady. He left for his deployment. He tried to write to her but she had vanished. When he came back home, he tried to find her, with no success. He went on to marry, and now has 3 grown daughters. He was totally shocked to discover he had a son--a son that looks just like him!! It's uncanny how much they look alike. They now see each other several times a year, and my son has become friends with his sisters and their families as well. I am so, so glad he found his birth father, it seemed to make him so happy.

@MarieCoyle I mean I don't quite like the idea. You brought him up. Why should he go looking for his birth father when he was nowhere to be found? No matter what the circumstances are, he should have given up on the idea of finding 'the biological father'! Yeah he kept looking for her and all, but no one can change the fact that he was nowhere to be found when his son was growing up!

I know KT Tunstall. I particularly like her hit "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree" but I do believe she's Scottish. I also like "And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p6799l9xeeg

Thank you so much. That is such a lovely compliment. The back stories he tell at his concerts are very interesting too and help give more meaning and insight into the songs. Some of the YouTube clips would give this information.
