Oh, goodie, I’ll get a “yup” today! Thank you, Jimmy Buffett!!! Yes, Buffett covered this song. I think Buffett covered just about every song having to do with the ocean, boats, or sailing (even though he missed Gordon Lightfoot’s great “Christian Island [Georgian Bay]”). This is another one that’s definitely a top 20 song, and here it is.
Southern Cross - Crosby, Stills, and Nash
I wish we all could be like Stephen Stills. After his divorce he took a long sailboat cruise to clear his head. Unfortunately, most of us don’t own sailboats. But we can enjoy Stills’ “therapy” that resulted in this song.
Speaking of this song, it originated as “Seven League Boots” by the Curtis Brothers in 1975. You can find their version on YouTube, and you’ll be surprised (maybe) to find that Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks played on their song (Buckingham produced the song, too). You’ll recognize the melody and the “around the world” part of the chorus.
Their song is pretty good, but Stills and his heartache made it into a masterpiece.
