A cashier at a particular grocery store I go to is the nicest guy you'll ever meet. He is an "older" gentleman - always so chipper and polite .
His line is often the shortest . . . it's NOT because he's fast. Anyone who has ever been in his line before probably knows they will get stuck there. He will ring up items so S-L-O-W-L-Y . . . then there will be pauses in his work flow as he chit chats.
It seems people avoid his line .
That being said, he is still always chipper and polite . I will go to his line (if I have the time) because he remembers me and I am always greeted with a smile. I might be late for my next stop, but I will leave happy appreciating his pleasant (though slow) customer service .
Do you intentionally go in lines where your favorite cashiers are? Or do you aim for the shortest, quickest line so you can get out of there?

He seems to be pretty easy-going.To be honest, for my part I won't go in the lines where he is .A grocery store isn't the place to shoot the breeze. The quicker he rings up items, the better !

@changjiangzhibin89 Maybe these people I see, even if they are store cashiers, are more reliable to chat with than some of my friends who cancel all the time .

I haven't known a cashier in decades but I remember when I used to shop at Albertsons on my way to work and would always look for one of 3 cashiers, they were the nicest people. I miss those days ..... well, not the going to work part but knowing those people. 2 of them have moved to another part of the country and the 3rd one passed away

Sometimes the cashier moves on with their lives (or pass away like you said) . . . we feel it for a while when they are no longer around when we go to these stores. There is only lady I know who retired from a store . . . we got to exchanging comics/memes via text and til this day she still sends me wacky funny things. But I still miss chatting with her at the store.

I am not familiar with the cashiers at my local grocery store, so I do not have a favorite. Some of them seem cranky or not in the mood most of the time. Hehe

We do not have favorite cashiers, anymore. I have one that stands out in my mind and I would go to her if I saw her, but I shop a random times. She is hearing impaired, and always dyes her hair purple. She is very patient with people who do not understand her slowness to understand. Her name is Esther. I knew she was hearing impaired before I read it on her name badge. She does a good job and there is nothing to complain about with her for sure.

Esther sounds "cool". There is a lady at Aldi's here with green hair and all kinds of piercings . . . she looks intimidating, but she is actually very sweet and helpful. She and Esther do their jobs - and it seems they have that extra something that we connect to.

Yes, I identify completely. An elderly gentleman at Walmart who I suspect works to avoid thinking about his pain (as well as to help make ends meet), is the checkout lane I look for every time I go there. He walks hunched over, and with a cane, but he always has a smile. It’s such a joy to talk to him.

I don't have a favorite cashier either, but I was at Kroger the other day, and I don't shop there much at all. Maybe every two or three months and not always at the same store.I lost my Kroger shoppers card several months ago, and haven't bothered to get a new ones. I usually ask the cashiers if they will put a card in for me. So, the last time the guy was saying we really aren't supposed to do this. I said "I'll never tell." Anyway, I got my groceries, plus the 10 percent employee discount embedded in it." After I got the groceries, I was thinking and remembering the same thing had happened with the same cashier a few months ago.I really need to get that Kroger card! I will see if they will send a duplicate to me.

I would think you could get a duplicate Kroger card. I need to make some new accounts . . . I don't swipe the reward cards anymore but I do stick in my phone number. The thing is I put in our old apartment phone number because I never bothered to change it!

@porwest I loved it when the cast broke out of character and started busting up. Funny stuff. Why don't today's shows give us that kind of belly laughter . . . the Carol Burnett Show was simply the best. Makes me wanna go out your way and check out this real like old man dude .

He must be working a part time job for something to do rather than necessity lol. His line is so short cause people wanna get their stuff and move on to the next errand. It sounds sad since you said he’s so polite, and I think it’s good manners to at least acknowledge someone but not everyone wants to have a conversation when they’re checking out.

That is possible - he could already be retired and is doing this just to do it. I do know a couple other older cashiers who do this as a side gig. Right - he is just the sweetest man . . . he has good old fashioned manners like no other there. But yah, not everyone wants to chit chat - they just want to get their stuff and get out of there.
