Simply Saturday

Today is a simple Saturday at our place. Back in the day, before my darling husband retired, he would work the occasional Saturday. When we were in our 30's and 40's he would work every other Saturday at the factory. The extra income was always welcome with a growing family and a couple paying off a mortgage and saving for their retirement. There was a point when things became easier for him. He is a certified health and safety trainer. He trains and certifies people on lift truck, skid steer and other workplace essentials that are required in various sectors. He is very well respected in his field, both for his professionalism, as well as for the owners knowing that they can call on him and have him there with little notice, and of course he always gives his regulars a good price cut. Today, he has gone back to the area that we used to live in. He is training at the recycling facility that a former co-worker of his (for almost 35 yrs they worked together) bought. The co-worker, Johnny, bought and then sold the business. His sons run it now, but they sold it to a large company that operates many of these facilities. Johnny's sons contacted my hubs and told him of the change of hands of the business and asked him not to extend the discount to this company. Not a bad gig for a few hours of work. Work that he absolutely loves. While he is gone, I did the grocery shopping. It was a top up week, fresh fruits and vegetables was all that we needed. I plan on removing everything on one of the shelves in the bathroom linen closet and reorganize it. I don't need him underfoot while I do that. I plan on getting some broccoli soup going while I do that. Today is a simple Saturday which takes me back 20 or 30 years. What is your day shaping up like today? ~Photo is mine

I also went groceries shopping today. Lindt's dark chocolate is on sale. I bought a few bars. I am a fan of dark chocolates. Tonight, I had scrambled eggs with onions for dinner. Just a simple dish.

That is great that you were able to stock up on the Lindt chocolate, they have the finest chocolate of any. I think that I will slip out in a little while and get a little Christmas shopping done for my hubs while he is away.

So far, it has been very peaceful. I've parked myself on the couch now, with my laptop and the music videos going on youtube. I have to get motivated and get out and pick up some Christmas gifts........it is only 6 weeks away.

It's always good when a person is respected for their professionalism and even better when called upon after retirement to do the work they used to do, it's what keeps us 'young'

What a wonderful life you two have had so far, I'll bet he was happy when you told him it was ok to help his friend.

Yes, the guys, Johnny and my hubs, started working at Woodbridge Foam together when it first opened back in the 80's. They were just a couple of young single guys, we remained friends as we dated, attended each other's weddings, visited at our homes when the babies came and the times were tight in the auto parts industry back in the early '90's. You cannot help but to share a special closeness after so many years of history. He does alot of 'big' companies also for training, Ontario Hydro, Ford assembly, and the school boards both here in London as well as in Chatham-Kent, which is where we always lived until 7 years ago. Johnny helped my hubs in so many ways, as did my hubs help Johnny. He was hesitant to go and train as he wanted him today, a Saturday, which is half of my weekend, and he didn't want me to be alone. I suggested that he may want to earn a little 'Santa cash' as well as help out a dear old friend.

@Juliaacv we are safe still. The typhoon is traversing the sea to make another landfall.

I find it easier to organise and tidy up if Vince is out of the house.

Yes, husbands, as much as we love them, can pose such a distraction when we need to do something, especially if it requires throwing things away.

You have good reason to be proud of your husband. I imagine his emoloyer was disappointed when he retired. It sounds like you have a very productive Saturday going on. I’m currently just thrilled I’m awake and organizing. I must have been fighting off a bug because I couldn’t keep my eyes open this past week. Thank goodness I got the essential appointments done without missing anything.

I'm sorry that you aren't feeling great, hopefully it passes. There is a bad bug going around here, which targets the lungs. I was speaking with a neighbour this morning who told me that she had bronchitis which lead to pneumonia. Her husband and daughter and she are all down with it.

I imagine it is very satisfying for hubby to do those trainings, and your probably enjoy having the house to yourself for a few hours too. Nothing too much going on here other than the Thanksgiving dinner in town. We are working on friend's BP though. It wasn't too bad this morning, but still higher than it should be. I am going to try to get some beetroot for him around here and some sort of beet juice drink.I also have him sipping on water. He sees the doctor on Monday, and I suppose he will get a med increase. He didn't want to double anything before he saw her, which is probably wise.

You are making good strides with trying to help him change his diet. I hope that there is good news at the doctor's appointment. I do enjoy having some quiet time to get things that I need done. I went out and got a couple of Christmas gifts, and picked up a salad for lunch, and when I got back home I noticed a text from him that he was on his way home already. It is over an hour's drive, so he won't be back for a bit, but I will not get the gifts that I bought wrapped. Sometimes he can get through the training in a short time if there are no questions as he goes and the class decides to get through it in a decent amount of time so that they can finish early for the day. Either way he is paid by the job.

Thanks for the sweet photo. Today I am hoping to get the house a little warmer. A friend says she is coming over this afternoon. She has been pretty down lately and needs to be with others. I'll warm up a pot of tea for her. If nothing else, we can all gripe about our typical November weather.

I went for an hour in the city nearby. Just a walking distance. This evening I made broccoli, potato and pumpkin soup. It was delicious.

Yes, it was nice for him to make the extra. We used to refer to it as gravy, but this will be more like golden gravy as he didn't extend his discount.
