Do you believe people can speak in tongues?

I guess most people are aware of what this is. It is when people in church or some kind of religious gathering start speaking in a language not native to them. I think it is Hebrew or Aramic. They are supposedly overcome by the spirit, and will break out into speaking in tongues. They do this rather often in certain types of churches like Assembly of God or Pentacoastal. I am sure not every congregation of these sects does it though. I have seen it a couple of times..it is uncanny...do I believe it is real? Probably not, but who am I to judge?

It is supposed to be such that no one follows them nor understands them.

@snowy22315 Scripturally the only time it would occur in an actual service would be if there was also an "interpreter" to expand on the message given to lift up the worshipers. Sadly there have been lots of scams associated with this spiritual gift and people are rightly skeptical.

In religion, they said speaking in tongues is speaking to God. Maybe. I don't know.

I have only heard of that in horror movies. I wouldn´t know anyway because I don´t go to church.

@snowy22315 Exactly. Just like if the devil talked through a person´s mouth. I don´r believe in that either.

Its written in the bible, it happened so its true. Speaking in tongues is one of the gift by the Holy Spirit of God. But yes, not all Christians have that gift, but anyway you can really control it, and it is also written in the bible that when you pray or preach and you start speaking in tongues pray to God to control it, because what good it will do when the people you are talkin too or preaching and praying dont understand you.

Exactly, and if it occurs in a service God will also send an interpreter to expand on the message.

There is a passage in the Bible that says to pray in private not show off your prayer.

I know that I cannot speak in tongues like some church personalities can do. I doubt that it is real.

@Deepizzaguy Yes, I mean there might be some divinely inspired, and some just looking to draw attention to themselves for whatever reason.

@snowy22315 I did read in a religious book that speaking in tongues could be someone talking gibberish.

It is not necessarily Greek or Aramaic. I believe it does happen. I have experienced other people having it happen. It is not scriptural unless it adds something to the uplifting of worship going on. My most specific example I will give is of my college room mate. We attended a Christian college that is NOT part of the groups that promote "tongues". My room mate was raised Lutheran, and before college attended a Pentecostal church. When we would have corporate prayer in services at times she would pray in tongues. Just as some others would pray under their breath but out loud. Specifically it sounded German to me. Unless you were standing right by her, you would not have known it. No she did not know German.I have had other experiences. I do not speak or pray in tongues. All spiritual gifts are given to facilitate worship and not be a spectacle.

What do you mean by corporate prayer? Are you just talking about group prayer?

It scares me. Have you seen the Key and Peele video, Ultimate Fighting? It's pretty funny and summarizes my view.

That is really my feeling. It doesn't seem real to me, but I am hardly an expert on the subject, and I don't want to judge a behavior I don't understand.
