So reliant on the internet!

This week I am away in Wales, and overnight we got 5 inches of snow so given that I am at the end of a narrow stony track you can imagine I’m not going anywhere. I have some jobs to do, but many of them are outdoor jobs which are difficult to get to when everything is covered in so much snow. So it would be the ideal time to catch up with all the things I haven’t managed to do at home in the hurly-burly of family life. The snag is that I don’t have a permanent internet connection here. I can use the hotspot from my phone but since the house has thick stone walls this generally only works outdoors. I can send an email by standing outside the door but it’s too cold for a long session of browsing, and now it’s stopped snowing the snow is starting to melt and drip on me! I need to pay for the girls’ music lessons, but that requires online banking. I need to submit the last couple of months’ worth of data from my bird-watching surveys, but that is all done online. I need to book a ticket for an event later this week, but that is available online. I need to sort out an issue with my savings account, but I really need to access the account online to get the details so I can ask for help over the phone (I have those details on paper at home, but didn’t think of bringing them with me). I need to look for some documents, but even those which are saved in my folders are stored on OneDrive and so although I think of them as being on my computer, they are only actually available when I am online. The same goes for sorting through photographs or trying to find out what I have written on a subject before. And of course reading and writing on MyLot – can’t do that either. I’m only writing this because I always write my posts in Word first, so I can write it now and upload it some time later when I get a chance. I really should have brought my sewing machine with me because it would have been the ideal time to start on my backlog of projects! PS: Home again now so I am able to upload this! I know the feeling. I really hate it that we're so reliant on the internet but I need to get over it and accept that it's the way it's going to be from now on.

@Fleura Yes, well, that's something to think about, isn't it? He's a long way from us but China is getting very friendly with the islands around us.

So many things have moved online, it makes life very difficult if you don't have it.

But I dont know in your olace, yours is snowy, while our window is sunny but this week its gloomy and sometimes there are rain showers.

It is quite amazing how the internet has slowly crept to becoming such an important part of our lives and when it goes down we are suddenly so restricted in what we do

It's really a pain, to be honest. We managed to get along OK before!

@Ronrybs Well when it works, yes it saves a lot of time in trips to the library, trying to get to the bank in your lunch break and such. But when it doesn't work the alternatives often aren't available any more.

@Fleura But is it better now or then. Sometimes it is worth the hassle to get quick answers... when it is working right

It's amazing how much we rely on the internet. I remember back in the 60s we were still using encyclopedias and the library for our information. Have a good day.

And in the 1980s and 90s. My then boyfriend worked on the development of some of the earlier mobile phones.

@Fleura That's amazing. I was surprised at how early computers were available.
