HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA Former GOP Congressman Matt Gaetz has withdrawn from consideration as US Attorney General in the next Trump administration. No one expected Trump to nominate him to begin with and no one expected Gaetz to voluntarily remove himself from the process. I mean it was just yesterday that JD Vance accompanied him to the Capitol to lobby for support and ask Senators to give him a chance.
Yesterday the House Ethics Committee met to try to decide if their report on their Gaetz investigation should be made public. (He was investigated for having sex with minors and illegal drug use among other things.) That very report was the reason that Gaetz immediately resigned from Congress when Trump selected him for AG. Past precedent was that such reports were usually not released after a member left Congress.
That being said Gaetz has many enemies in Congress--even in his own party--and it was being signaled pretty loudly that he did not have much of a chance of actually being confirmed by the Senate even with the report released and definitely not without it. It also was widely expected that the contents of the report would leak if they were not officially made public.
So now Matt Gaetz is not only out of his job in the House of Representatives but he is out of the race for Attorney General. I would like to think that he will now just go away but I'm sure we won't be that lucky. Trump doesn't have another person in mind just yet but I'm sure he will select someone else entirely unsuitable like Marjorie Taylor Greene, Sarah Palin, Rudy Giuliani, Jeanine Pirro, Sidney Powell, Alina Habba, or Jim Jordan. Stay tuned!
