The Problem With Non-Profits

Hey readers here is a hot issue for you that is involved with every community in the United States. Lackawanna County and the City of Scranton are having severe financial problems, and the problem just came to a head. Scranton University is a non-profit and cannot be taxed, so it is in the PILOT program. PILOT stands for Payment in lieu of taxes. Scranton is strapped for money so the city council is not satisfied with the PILOT payment. Believe it or not, Scranton City Council refused to pass a resolution for a grant the university needs for its medical program. The URL for the article is listed below. How do you analyze the role of non-profits? They contribute a lot to your community, generate a lot of economic activity, develop a lot of new jobs, but they do not want to pay for all the government services they need to survive. What is the solution to the dilemma? Please let us know what you think. Thanks Peter .

I think you answered your own question in the context of your discussion. What non-profits do for communities outweigh what they'd have to pay in taxes. Taxes is often the job killer, because when a company needs to pay taxes, it's us, the consumer who pays that. And, not every non-profit is going to suffer the same troubbles.
